Is UChicago a gay-friendly school?

How likely is it for someone gay to get into a relationship?

Seadog, this is such a great question. UChicago is a gay friendly school, a bi friendly school, a trans friendly school, an asexual friendly school, a straight friendly school, an “I only love the internet” friendly school… basically, if you can sexually identify as it, we are friendly towards it. I know many people who were not comfortable being out at home who have felt totally welcomed and accepted on campus; it is not unusual to be walking on the quads and see two men or two women holding hands. If you are looking for a same-sex relationship, you will be able to find others who are as well, and find that people are welcoming and accepting of your identity. Provided, of course, that you’re willing to do some searching for people, dating, etc (which for any relationship is the hard part anyway  )
Several on-campus organizations support GLBTQ life on campus- from Queers and Associates (basically, our form of a GSA), to the Feminist Majority, to Out and About (focusing more on gay and lesbian health issues), to Queereligious (connecting gays and lesbians with open, accepting religious life and services in the Chicago area), Chicago is an accepting place. You can be out and vocal; you can be out and keep it to yourself. Either way, you will find here a community of people and a campus with no qualms about sexuality. My favorite example? The Westboro Baptist Church, famous for hating… everything… was on campus last year for a large protest, carrying very negative signs with messages about gays and lesbians. Directly across the street from their protest was a traditionally masculine, “Frat Boy” kind of fraternity. Their reaction to the whole thing? They put up a huge sign that said “Straight Huggin’: No Tolerance for Intolerance”, blasted showtunes and songs like “It’s Rainin’ Men”, and danced in their underpants on their front porch to support the community of protesters from different on-campus organizations. Basically: the most stereotypical of bros, coming out en force in support of gay rights. Awesome, no?

haha that’s great PSAC!!! this certainly is making me lean toward Chicago more again.

^ Just wanted to add that you can find the frat protest of the Westboro Baptist protesters on youtube.

This was a comment on the frat dance video: “U of Cer’s have long not cared about whether you are gay or straight, but rather how nerdy you are.”

I think that sums it up.

OP, my son is gay and find the U of C very friendly and accepting.
