I really wanted to go there for economics but I heard that it is as work and no play type of feel. I would like to know your thoughts on this.

Far from it! Students find a lot of fun and engagement not just through the house system, student organizations, and the city of Chicago, but also through their courses. One of the best classes I took at UChicago when I was an undergraduate was also one of the ones I worked hardest toward: Baseball History and Culture, an anthropology class. We read about two full books a week, but each week’s discussion was endlessly entertaining.

I don’t think anyone would consider us “boring” for sure!

Nope, not boring at all. Admittedly, it is a lot of work and you have to truly enjoy learning, studying, your classes, etc. if you want to enjoy your time here. However, there is always free time for fun – as Graham hinted at, the house system is fantastic at making socializing easy and provides an easy source of entertainment. Outside of that, there are different social events of all kinds to do whatever it is that you want to do. Club frisbee (amazing group of people), MUNIC, Vegan Society… the list goes on and on. There’s also unstructured fun… you’re bound to find a group of friends here that you become close to. There’s downtown Chicago about 20 minutes away by CTA, frat and house parties if you’re into that (don’t hate it before you try it, you’d be surprised by how un-fratty the frats are here)… trust me, you won’t be bored.

its not boring…pm me if you have specific questions and I can tell you about the social scene.

Boring??? Not the UChicago I go to…

No, though I always find it laughable (not to mention embarrassing) when people answer this question with academics, serious RSOs, scav hunt etc. While you can, and indeed will, have plenty of interesting conversations of an academic nature in your free time here, that is by no means the only sort of “fun” thing available. There is ample opportunity for the typical college antics, and we have the entire city of Chicago at our fingertips.

(this is an excellent answer on the subject: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-chicago/1182827-does-fun-come-die-here.html?highlight=chicago+fun#post12986468)

Nope, not true. In any case, every school is what you make of it.
