Hi, My daughter got ucla and ucsd(regents). But she is interested in ucla. Is UCLA a better choice in terms of grading, getting research, registering courses? The Regents at SD is really worth it?
I got Regents at UCSD and UCLA and am attending UCSD right now. I can say that regents at UCSD is a HUGE plus. All regents scholars have priority enrollment which means that we’re pretty much guaranteed the classes we want, at the times we want, with the professors we want. One of my roommates on the other hand is not Regents and she has had to wait list classes or take less desirable class times or professors. this upcoming quarter she wasn’t even able to get into the class she needs so she’s going to have to take the class next year, which unfortunately makes it a little bit more difficult to graduate in four years. I have to add a disclaimer though: both my roommate and I are in STEM fields but if your daughter is not then it may be easier for her to get into her classes so priority registration may not be as important for her.
Thanks for the reply. My D is in STEM field. Pre Med path.
It is a huge plus …more so for the pre-meds. My daughter who has Regents in UCLA is on track to finish in 3 years which would have been impossible otherwise!
A lot of research opportunities for the Regents in UCLA (I am sure is the same in UCSD). She started doing research in her second quarter of the first year.
jhu is a better option
As a parent who has children who studied on the pre med path at both schools, I can clearly see the difference in their education. Both of my students were exceptional in high school, so I thought they would do well in both colleges. In LA, D has found that people place a stronger emphasis on partying than on studying. This combined with harder course work has ruined many of her friends GPAs, making it hard for them to get into med school. In San Diego I have found a much safer environment for my D and with regents she was able to graduate quickly and now has many offers for med school. I think that both are great places for education however, regents and a stronger program at San Diego was better for us.
