I think Michigan is a great school and so does my son, who attends, but we are not black and I don’t know what criteria you’re looking for. I know that my son likes the very wide and vibrant diversity of the student body and enjoys the cultural mix. I think “fit,” when it comes to a school is more highly personalized than strictly cultural criteria, though. If you haven’t gone to visit, go visit – that will help. Since there are more than 1,000 clubs on campus, perhaps you could get in touch with groups better able to help you get a feel.
Good luck in your search!

Well it depends what you want. I’m sure there are tons of black “whatever” clubs. There are a decent amout of blacks people here, mostly white and asian though. Overall though Michigan is great.

I’m African American here and I’ve been having a very good time at Michigan so far. If you are accepted and become a part of the bridge program, you will meet many minorities and form lasting friendships. Some people that met at that specific program have some of the greatest bonds in the African American community here. If you are not accepted into that program like I was, Michigan takes getting used to. I didn’t know anyone here when I came so I had to be open minded. I joined some organizations my first semester and met some really good friends that are still my friends today at orientation. I’m apart of a historically black fraternity on campus. I think that I’ve acclimated very well to Michigan. There is self segregation and you might experience some racism, but for the most part Michigan is a great place for African Americans. Michigan is 6% black and I know UNC is around 10%. I’m not sure about the UNC experience but I strongly encourage you to apply to Michigan. Not only will you be challenged academically, but you will have a great social life if you are open, active and friendly. There is also Michigan football and Ann Arbor. Good luck making your decision.

The school is overwhelmingly white and Asian. I’ve seen very few black students which is a little disappointing for me, but I didn’t expect there to be a lot anyway. I guess when you come from a city that is almost 50% black, anywhere else seems strange.

I think the answer to a lot of these race questions being asked is really “it depends”. It depends on the individual, if you make an effort to be open and immerse yourself in the community at UM and not mind the occasional jerkoff, you’ll be happy. But if you let the occasional dumbass (these are available at every school from Harvard to san diego state) get to you…

According to the statistics, there’s about 1500 black students at Michigan. While I agree that in a relative sense, that’s not a lot (there’s a bit over 15,000 white students) but in an absolute sense, there aren’t just be “very few.”

The experience is what you make it, but making friends with other African Americans provides you with a support network of friends that will always support you. The black community is so small and everyone for the most part knows are has seen one another.

I will also point out that I don’t see many black students around… Though I imagine my experience isn’t the one you’re looking for.

Well UNC is a more white school than UMich, if thats what you are looking for.

UNC has a higher black percentage than U of M
