I've been accepted to UNCC and App State. I've followed the crime situation at UNCC for awhile now. There have been 4-5 rapes in the women's dormitories during the past two years, and numerous robberies around campus. Just last week, there was an actual holdup in an apartment complex. I've also been reading a blog called something like Thinking of Attending UNCC? and it links to literally a thousand news articles related to crimes and other unpleasant things that have occurred near the campus in the recent past. I can rent-by-the-room, but my understanding is that the apartment managers put thugs in the same apartment with students.

I don't know what to think. I may have to live on campus for four years and i really don't want to have to stay on campus 24/7. I don't want to bring a car, so I'll have to take a bus to get around. Charlotte has a nice night life, but I don't think it's worth being robbed or shot just to get away from campus. I COULD bring a car, I suppose, but i was really hoping to avoid that expense of $500.00 per year just to park and probably get broken into. (According to the blog, there's a lot of that).

I have visited both campuses. I like App State's setting, but that could get boring after awhile. I also saw Charlotte's campus. It's spacious and pretty, but the immediate area outside of campus is so ghetto and scummy it's frightening. The downtown area is nice with lots of hangouts, but getting there doesn't seem like it'll be too pleasant.

I can't find a whole lot about crime at App State. Can anyone give me a few thoughts?

App State is safe because there’s plenty to do on campus, with 17,000 students and a lot of spirit, but it’s in the mountains.
UNCC is in a city so you have to be aware of your surroundings. See what security measures are in place at the college. As for actual problems, those are officially published on the college’s website, you can just look it up to confirm whether the blog is legit or trollish.
Is there a difference in costs for you? What about your major?

You can’t check the campus crime and fire log (Clery Reports) online anymore. They haven’t been posted for months. You hafta ask the campus police to see the log. They quit showing the reports online sometime after the November 2013 rape and the one at the beginning of 2014. Which makes me wonder if on-campus crime at UNCC is a growing problem too.

The blog is legit. It’s all links to news reports from TV stations and the Charlotte Observer. This is the blog:

Tuition isn’t a consideration, and App State actually has a better program for my field of study. (I’m not an engineering or CS major). App State is a nicer area. I was just hoping to be able to experience some kind of night life on weekends, but if campus life is better at App State, I should probably go there. One of the complaints that I’ve heard from friends who go/went to UNCC is that it’s a huge commuter college. Everyone packs up their suitcase on weekends and goes home.

Unless someone can convince me otherwise, I will commit to App State next week.

Yes, UNCC is more commuter and yes people tend to go home on weekends, more so than at Appalachian State or other UNC’s such as UNC-W, UNC-A, or UNC-CH). However, although freshmen aren’t guaranteed housing, 75% live on campus. At Appalachian State, freshmen are guaranteed housing and 99% live on campus. That guarantees campus life. Although the town is bigger than you’d expect for it being the mountains and all, you won’t find “city life” there, you’ll have to drive since it’s about 100 miles from Greensboro, Winstom-Salem, or Charlotte.
