I read through some threads on this forum and now I'm insecure about my college decision. A university that I will eventually call my alma mater!

Yes, it has risen a lot in ranking and will continue to do so, but is it still known as the school for rich snobby frat boys? I come from a poor family and I'm a first generation student.

Is it considered the NYU of the west? I respect NYU as a fine institution and many don't seem to see USC in the same regard.

I don't want that kind of stereotypical image that people may place on me.

Wow. So let’s see. This guy’s first post ever just happens to be a slam on USC in the guise of a question. At the same time dreaming up some ‘NYU of the west’ nonsense to prop up NYU.

Calling Captain Transparent, Suzy Sincere on the line.

It is a legitimate question. USC is known for being a rich kids paradise. It doesn’t mean it is a crappy school. Their academics are top notch. USC Viterbi engineering school is top 10 in the nation and USC Marshall school of business is top notch. Trojans are awesome Very strong alumni base…USC School of Cinematic Arts is world famous and is a great Cinematic school.

I think you shouldn’t go. All the various colleges and schools within the University are terrible; the grounds are in awful shape; the dorms are falling apart; the students are unhappy especially those whose parents make less than $300,000 a year; there’s no school spirit, no one ever wears any USC tees or sweats; the sport’s teams are awful; and they’re all snobs. And BTW, the weather stinks. You should go to NYU. Please.

A great school? Yes, lots of frat/sorority stereotype people? Yes, also
but that doesn’t mean that USC is a “crappy” school, it’s one of the best colleges in the US

There’s no point in discussing stereotypes of a school that were mostly true in the 1970’s, when USC did admit mostly B+ students who could pay full boat tuition.

that was over 30 years ago. Look at the financial aid stats for USC students currently… they’re right in line with most schools, and the student population is really diverse – across racial, geographic and economic lines.

That’s right, they’ve come a log way in the area of diversity. From what I hear, they now admit spoiled rich kids regardless of their ethnic origin.

But seriously folks, unless you really gotta have that New Yawk experience, I’d imagine most people would pick USC over NYU. They are probably roughly equal academically, but USC seems to offer a LOT more in the way of campus life, sports, weather, alumni networking, availability of sweatshirts with the college name on them etc. Bottom line, having second thoughts is natural, but I say be delighted that you’ll go to USC, and don’t look back.

USC is a great school (I almost went there, but decided on somewhere else that gave me more $$). It’s an awesome place and you will surely enjoy yourself and do well.
