USD has a steretype of designer wearing, shallow, conservative, un-diverse place? Is it true?
Are people who are not like that happy?

Why is it that "shallow", "conservative", and "un-diverse" always get lumped with each other into the same negative generalization?

On the other hand I'm also interested in the general political and social atmosphere of the place.

"Is USD just full of blonde Republicans?"

No.

I hope not. I happen to be an African-American Democrat. But regardless, it doesn't really matter. College is about meeting people different than yourself.

Native American-Independent so I hope not!

Quick Facts, Fall 2008

Hey you guys! I'm a freshman this year at USD, and was in your position one year ago. And let me tell, USD the best thing that has ever happened to me, and trust me, i had a fun time in high school. I'm ethnic, not rich, Democrat, and so far this has been the best 4 months of my life EVER. Yes there are the stereotypes, but I'm friends with lots of the "blonde republicans" and they aren't stuck up or snobby at all. Everyones so friendly, and down for a good time. I think it also depends on your personality too. I'm really chill and down to party, and i found everyone with a common interest in that. But fact is, yes most people are republicans. All my suite mates were ****ed when Obama won, but me and my friend just jumped in scream. No one really talked much about politics at USD...

I'm a sophomore, and I can also say that the stereotype isn't entirely true. I was pretty politically involved on campus, and was a member of a few different political clubs this last semester. Young Democrats always had FAR greater numbers than College Republicans. Also, tons of people had Obama stickers and shirts when it got close to election day. Of the many people I know at USD, I could count on one hand the number of Republicans I've met, and I have talked politics with a lot of people. So as for the Republican thing, I would say that is definitely not true.

As for the other parts... Well, there are a lot of blondes. It's Southern California, what else do you expect? But honestly, there's a lot of other people, too. Sure, you get the sorority and frat types with their designer clothing and expensive cars, but there's a lot of real people here, too. And while it isn't the most diverse college by any means, it is a lot more diverse than other schools.
