Is UVA a bad idea for undergrad biology/premed?

I visited uva and I love it!!! The campus is gorgeous and it is a great school. I want to either be a biomedical researcher (phd) or a doctor (md). I went on the US News biology rankings and UVA isn't very high. This disappointed me because I love the school! Should I still consider UVA? Also, the biology ranking was for graduate school so I don't know if it would be bad to major in biology there for solely undergrad.

I teach at UVA (not in the bio department) and have lots and lots of students who’ve gone on to excellent med schools, or to grad school in the sciences. You can get a solid undergraduate background in biology, or in most standard subjects, at pretty much any reputable school.

If you want a PhD, most people go to a different university than their undergrad school, for most fields. Therefore, the grad program is less impt. to you. Also, keep in mind that universities with huge graduate programs may rank higher in US News simply because more people are familiar with their profs. UVa is a mid-sized university.

If you want to be a MD, you should be asking questions about the experiences and success rates of pre-meds, not grad biology.
