okay personally i have no doubt that uva is 100% safe. but my dad seems to think otherwise. he thinks that more specifically va is not safe. he keeps telling me that it is something about their gun laws or whatever. basically i need someone to settle my dad's worries that va is totally safe especially the area of uva.

charlottesville was ranked as the #1 safest place in America at one point (if anyone knows who made that ranking or what year it was post it, because I don’t know)

Check out the rankings on the left of the linked site

8/10 for campus safety.

Don’t mind Harvard or Yale. He’s very pretentious, insecure (notice it in his username) and also enjoys replying on threads in an unnecessary fashion.

Virginia is pretty safe in general, I would say that the most dangerous part is the Norfolk-Hampton area, but UVA is not near that area, there’s gang violence where I used to live (sterling park-herndon area in NoVa) but it’s really not that bad compared to other “troublesome” parts of the U.S., in perspective the U.S. is extremely safe compared to real slums in other countries ecspecially in the 3rd world, so your dad shouldn’t have anything to worry about

i believe that uva is extremely safe. that being said, i also believe that vtech is extremely safe. just because someplace is safe doesn’t mean someone can’t walk to campus armed to the teeth and shoot a bunch of people.

gun violence is a legitimate concern, but isn’t any bigger of an issue at uva than it is at any other campus. all you can really do is be vigilant about reporting suspicious behavior to the authorities.

William & Mary=very safe

VT…

There’s definitely crime in CVL; it’s a small southern city after all, def. not a town. With city life comes homeless people, the distraught, and sometimes crime.
As a female student, living in an apartment off-Grounds, I always have my wits about me while walking home late. I’ve never been threatened, but one can never really drop their guard anywhere (NYC, Chicago, CVL…), IMHO. I avoid the spooky places that I’ve identified on and about Grounds. I walk with friends or kind escorts, but usually, never alone. Though lots of students do walk alone, I just don’t.
I’ve seen reports of theft, and even rape>>sad, but true. Never seen guns of any sort.
As a First Year student I lived on Grounds and felt safe most times, but that could have been naivete on my part as well.
Bottom line, always have a plan B, think ahead, be safe.

I personally think UVa has better reporting and notification of crime than some other schools.

My own alma mater had a string of zeros in every column on their crime statistics page. That was not accurate. I just checked that major city in which that school (and many others) is located on the site posted by jasonborn and there were zero crimes reported there. It can’t possibly be correct.

I find it odd that an adult would label an entire state as unsafe. That sounds like a scare tactic to me. The gun laws in Virginia are not as strict as in other states, which means we are a destination for people in other states who want guns, not that the average Virginian is collecting guns.

Whenever you have alcohol flowing there will always be affiliated assaults and sexual assaults. In College *rowler there was a comment about a serial rapist. Of course this was several years ago. Still higher than average. There was a thread about this sometime ago.
