is wake too conservative?

I'm with juba2jive here. The whole "football attire" thing is sometimes a little over the top. It's not as though half of Screamin' Demons does it, but a few do, and they stick out pretty badly. I mean, it's nice (at least for us guys) to see girls in sundresses on such a regular basis, but it IS a football game, after all. Guys deck out the pastel oxfords, as mentioned above with (I'll probably get slammed for saying this again) the most pricey animal logo available at their hometown mall.

Some take it to awful extremes- during our game against UVA, this girl wearing a huge gold flower pin thing walked behind our row to get to her friends. It was so large that it literally smacked everyone's heads in the row in front of her (namely, us). Her response? "I know, isn't it adorable? It's a Christmas ornament!" At least it was the right color.......

It's just something you get used to; it's not as though the entire campus is ultra dressy or Conservative (actually, I'd say it's a really healthy mix of all political positions), and it won't (overall) detract from your experience at Wake.

I am a freshman at Wake now and knowing about the lack of social life with the exception of the greek system and then the lack of diversity and conservative viewpoint of Everyone I wouldn't unless it's the best school you get into

bitter much?
i'm not greek or conservative and i like wake just fine.

I feel that if you don't have an expectation that Wake is super conservative and preppy, you'll be fine. But if you do, then confirmation bias will wrongly continue to convince you that it is.

wilmingtonwave: I've heard about the new shuttle system to downtown Winston on Thursday through Saturdays. Have you used them at all? What's the student take on the downtown area?

I have a car this year so I don't need to use it, but people seem to like it. It would have been nice to have that option as a first year or second year when I didn't have a car. Downtown is not nearly as bad as some people make it out to be, albeit some of the stuff is bars if you are 21, but there are some really good restaurants and artsy activities to do. Downtown will continue to become nicer, and I think it will be really interesting to see how nice it is when I come back as an alumni in 5-10-15 years.

Hi! I’m an asian-indian senior from the bay area and I’m waiting to hear back from Wake Forest (fingers crossed!). I was wondering if anyone could give insight into the diversity/how minorities are treated? Going from a school thats 80% not caucasian and very liberal, to a school like Wake would definitely be a big change. I dis visit the school last summer and was treated with nothing but kindness; everyone was notable more helpful than at any other school I had visited before…Another question- do people assume minorities are accepted simply for being a minority and do people assume minorities are “token” when they join clubs/sororities?

@binderpaper I personally think you’ll be fine. I did not fit the “typical” WFU student (albeit white), am very left-leaning and did not have any interest in Greek life and I still enjoyed my experience (not to be confused with loving every day/all aspects). If you want to be in the fraternity system, as far as I know your racial identity is not something that will make or break it. If it’s your thing, you’ll find folks who will want you. I knew non-white students in the PanHel fraternity system. Is it common, less so… but since I was neither interested nor heavily involved I can’t comment on the experience or reasons for that. I do not believe that most people think that one is a “token” minority. I can say that neither myself or my friends believed that. I am sure some believe that (at WFU and also at Harvard). Be confident in who you are and you will enjoy college. Expect everyone to love and respect you and you will find people who dont and be frustrated. Good luck to you and #GoDeacs.
