I keep hearing that Wash U is a liberal progressive campus. Is this true? Now I differentiate between trendy pro-establishment Economist reading liberalism and actual progressive lefty liberalism like what's seen at UT-Austin and UC Berkeley. Which one is WUSTL?

Considering it's a pretty selective, private institution, it's probably more the former than the latter, right?

That is funny. My son is an Economist-reading liberal who is going to attend UT-Austin in the fall. I would certainly have put him in the progressive-lefty-liberal camp, though; and I would NEVER call him trendy or pro-establishment.

My son chose UT over Duke, WashU, Ohio State (honors and scholarship), UNC (honors), College of William and Mary (James Monroe scholar), Florida State (honors and scholarship) and a small Jesuit LAC (John Carroll with a full tuition scholarship) because it was the right “fit” for him (LAH helped make it seem smaller) and because they have what is arguably the best program in the country for his chosen major. He expects to get a great education, learn a lot, hear and play some great music and prepare for graduate school.

It is hot in TX, but he was raised in Florida (we now live in Ohio) and he won’t be spending the whole summer there every year. As we have learned from Ohio: There is much more to a place than its weather.

And in giving up WashU, he is giving up proximity to his wonderful aunt – which made his decision even harder.

D1 chose UT. Chatted with her today as she was enjoying 40 Acres Fest. Austin is incredible. And regarding the heat, Austin is a much nicer place to be in January than, say, Cambridge, MA.

Me too, I have tons of family in St Louis. I already have a decline letter prepared, but I haven’t sent it yet … :(
The confirmation e-mail I got from W&M was nice, it even included a link in case “I wanted to apply again some time in the future, …” … Turning down Vanderbilt also hurt, … but you can only go to one :)
