Is Wesleyan U (conn) Poor?

Not Only In The Sense Of Endowment, But Also In Appearance. I've Been Told That It Looks Bad And Is Next To A Bad Part Of Middletown.

Money Magazine doesn't think Wesleyan is "poor" or "unattractive": CNNMoney.com || Is college still worth the price?

As for being in a "bad" part of Middletown, it's in the downtown section of a traditional, blue-collar New England town. In case you don't what that entails, it means a racially mixed, generally law abiding, environment where people go to bed early and where the most common complaints are about noise coming from Wesleyan parties. Kids (very big kids, in some cases) try to crash parties, but, that's pretty universal wherever colleges are located near populated areas.

maybe 15 years ago, those statements would have applied. however, ex-president doug bennet really turned things around. he raised a large sum of money and drastically improved the physical campus. I would say that statement no longer applies... the campus is much, much better than it was 2 decades ago. The architecture varies a lot, but it's by no means unsightly.

Is there a "good" part of Middletown?

main street is wonderful. tons of restaurants, a few shops (great bike store), and a good ambiance. the rest of the town... eh. but main st is all you really need, when so much happens on campus

Wesleyan isn't one of the richest colleges by any means but its endowment per student is right around $200,000, which puts it in the same ballpark as Penn and Cornell, among others---in other words, fully adequate. D & I visited the campus this summer and found it very attractive, well maintained, and up-to-date with a nice mix of refurbished older buildings and a lot of attractive new ones. Middletown is not likely to make anyone's list of all-time great college towns, but it's OK, basically just a working class New England town with a decent downtown just a couple of blocks from the Wesleyan campus.
