if you're worried about where you live definitely visit before making a decision.
nothing in the state of indiana is anything like california.

Well you really are in the middle of nowhere.. I believe the road that leads to Purdue is just miles and miles of farm yard.. within the actual campus though, there are like 40000 people.. so even if it doesn't seem like there is much to do, there are tons of people to hang out with.

For things to do.. frat parties, dorm parties, chillin with friends in dorms, hookah bars, bars in general, movies, sports, there's a rec center with like tons of sports, lots of restaurants.. other than that there's not much to see there. If you are somewhat social though you should be fine...

The campus is ugly though in my opinion.. buildings are plain, mostly made out of brick, campus looks old.. it does have certain nice spots though.

As for parties.. if you're on campus its either dorm or frat parties.. or bars.. not much else. I don't think there's any nearby clubs or anything.

^^Spoken by a purdue student btw.. hehe

Oh by the way.. get a huge coat, because it is *ing cold here for the majority of both semesters. Last year I would say it was freezing from November to April pretty much.. and by freezing, I mean we get tons of snow, we get TONS of high speed winds, and the temperatures usually stay in the single digits, or negatives (up to minus 20!!!) throughout November to April... just to give you an idea, we had a couple snow days last year.. that hasn't happened in decades if I recall correctly. Just saying, be prepared for a *ing cold year the next 4 years.
