Is WP admission binding

This may sound like a stupid question but if you apply to WP and get in is it a binding decision?

No, not at all. Please keep in mind that there is an awful lot of discussion regarding people who accept appointments when they really don't want to attend a service academy. Also, the new cadets who begin Beast and then leave within a few days are another big topic. If you receive an appointment, you will have time to compare it to other offers of admission on the table. I (and I'm sure others here) encourage you to do your homework and be sure that you want to live this very challenging lifestyle before accepting any appointment.

Good Luck!

Another stupid question, as long as you keep trying during things like Beast they don't kick you out if you're lagging behind or anything physically do they?

You must pass the APFT at the end of Beast. If you do not you start forfeiting things like weekend passes (the one you do get). Im not sure about the final deadline but if you do not pass the test you are out. If you take your physical preparation for Beast seriously you will be fine. If not....
Start running NOW.
Trying and failing is not going to cut it. Good luck!

could you give me the basic outline on the APFT?

I wouldn't be that worried I think, i'm in okay shape atm, my jogging route is 2.6 miles in 20 minutes with minor hills.

That's interesting. I know its been brought up before, but how far do you suggest a person be able to run pre-Beast?

(Sorry, this is my first time posting on the usma forum. I have an LOA and am currently deciding between usma and usafa.)

thanks

Nalcon: The Army Phys. Fitness Test has three components: Pushups, Situps and 2-mile run. To pass you must score a minimum of 60 points in each of the three areas. The number of repititions (within 2 minutes) and time for 2-mile run to acheive the minimum score differs by age and gender.

For cadets (17-21) the minimums(60)/Max (100) are:
Pushups - 42/71 male, 19/42 female
Situps - 53/78 male, 53/78 female - yes, same scale.
2 mile Run - 15:54/13:00 male, 18:54/15:36 female

Cadets must pass the APFT twice yearly while at WP.

During beast, in addition to passing the APFT, each cadet is graded by their cadet leaders. While WP provides support to assist the new cadets, ultimately performance, not effort, is required. An uncorrected, failing grade will get you separated from the corps.

Suggest you train so that you can exceed minimums before R-day. Good luck and congratulations on your LOA.

hmmm. i can almost do the minimum for push ups at 38 right now. I believe that a cadet can fail up to three times and not get seperated. Or maybe twice and pass a third time...anyway yea

You fail during your second APFT during Beast and they'll put you in CZZP, which is basically like physical hazing for the first half of a semester. Also, after the first week or so if you fall out of any runs they'll counsel you. If you do it several times, they might recommend you for separation. They can't do that during Beast, but they can right at the beginning of the Academic year. It happened to a kid in my squad. You don't want to fail. JQ, are you a girl or a guy?

Don't worry about the DISTANCE that you run. Just make sure you can run FAST and up HUGE hills. Well, actually, the pace might not be that bad for guys, but it was hard for me. The hills are really what you need to get ready for. I think the longest we ever ran was like 5 miles or something like that, but it was a Regimental Run, really easy.

I'm bad at pushups... so, how many pushups would you suggest?? I need like some sort of rough guideline or something.

Is there any way to improve pushups, besides doing them, like lifts or something??

I can tell you that I started a week and a half ago doing 45 push-ups. This morning I did 65 push-ups in one minute. You can improve them with constant practice. I did them once a day in the morning for one full rep. Worked for me, might for you.

By the way, I started in August doing about 30 push-ups. ;) I also started at about 5 pull-ups, I haven't done them lately, but I worked up to 11.

I'm still stalking the elusive pullup. I am so fricken close to getting one its scary. Any day now... any day...

My pushups are CURRENTLY at about 30. I hit 38 on my CFA. I do them all the time.

Are you male or female?

Yea sadly there arent any quick fixes. I can tell you lifting helps, but i'm not sure if it helps more than just doing push ups itself. Just doing them when you workout seems to be the easiest for me. As for pull ups, i ordered a pull up bar from amazon last year to prepare for the CFA. I started at 6 and the most i've ever done is 23.

I'm not exactly a complete success story because I've been relatively busy working out throughout high school. But to prepare for the CFA I did the following workout and I'm sure it would be good to prepare you for Beast.
(Its an adopted pre-BUDS workout) If you can do this workout I guarantee you will be ready for beast. (Feel free to not do the swimming portion, I dont know 100% but i'm pretty sure your fine at Beast as long as you are a moderate swimmer).

female...

thanks, that workout is similar to what i've been doing but way more strutured. i think i need structure.

i am up to 56 pushu[s

I'm a guy and I'm up to 41 push ups right now. I haven't practiced since last spring so I'm a bit out of shape. I'm not worried about the run or sit ups, as I'll only need a few months to train for that...but my push up ability is extremely lacking. I have set my goal at 68 push ups for the start of beast.

BTW: What was the most amount of push ups you had to do at one time? Oh and what the heck is CZZP. And do the girls and guys run together during these runs?

When I went to USAFA summer seminar (and I'm sure it's true at all academies) the number of pushups wasn't the problem (I can knock off 70). The problem was them keeping you in that position so long, then dropping you...letting you rest in full pushup position....dropping you again. Your arms have absolutely no rest. Train with this...If your doing sets...keep in pushup position between them.

jq722 - 100 is not out of the realm of what you might be required to do when at an academy. (Got a letter home about it during Indoc at USMMA. He hurt for three days.) But the thing is, you will be surprised at what you can do when you're pushed. Just get in the best shape you can and run and run some more. You'll do fine.
Mumford- with 23 pull ups, you are THE man.
Hope more appointments come in time for Christmas!!

Deffinitely go for shoulder endurance. At summer seminar(USAFA), they gave us a knowledge test in the halls during doolie for a day, and we had to do it in the pushup position. It went for about 7-8 minutes. I bet I did about 120 pushups that day, but the most at one time was like 25. Like falconhopeful said, its not the amount but the no rest. 10 pushups one minute, then holding yourself up for a few minutes, get up and run for a minute, then do some more pushups, all while singing the Air Force song.
