Is your off-campus kid eating enough?

i wanted to pass this along to others who may be in the same situation. Son, now a senior at AU, is living in the Berks. He’s not on the meal plan, and we were concerned about his eating habits. He can’t afford to eat out often, and grocery shopping was a problem as neither he nor his roommate have cars and relying on friends or the bus for transportation to the supermarket wasn’t working out. Solution: hovermom learned that Safeway delivers groceries for free. She now is ordering groceries for son once a month online, which is then delivered at a time when he’s home. Cooking it is up to him.

Thank You!! But, its only the first order that’s free. After that it ranges from 7.00 to 13.00 dollars. Still not bad for a big order and Peace of Mind!

I used to live across from the Berkshire. Used to walk to Giant at Newark and Wisconsin. Went with an empty backpack and came home with a full backpack and a grocery bag in each arm. It can be done.

My son is also at the Berks but has a meal plan on campus. Just a thought, but since your son is almost ready to go out into the world, shouldn’t he be ordering his own groceries. It’s not easy to let go. I am guilty of this type of thing, too.

Yes he should-if he had the $$$ to do it with. Alas, he remains unemployed at the moment so is still in need of parental assistance

When our D moved off campus we gave her a set amount for rent, utilities and food. She was responsible to go grocery shopping. Fortunately her apt is only a few blocks from a Safeway. It ended up costing us less than a meal plan that never seemed to fit her anyway. She and her roomie actually cook occasionally.
