Issuing a diploma

For those of you who have used a combination of at-home courses, online courses, CC, tutorials, etc, made your official transcript–did you issue a diploma? I plan to create an attractive homeschool diploma for my daughter next year but I wondered if it has any use outside of our homeschool?

We made my daughter a nice diploma, but it was mainly for her. She still props it up on her desk at college sometimes to remember how she got there and how hard she worked, but no college has asked to see it.

We made one too, but it’s not official. Its use depends on your state home school regulations. If your state recognizes a diploma issued by you, then it’s useful for more than decoration. If your state is like NY and doesn’t, then it’s not.

Where online can U get into college without a diploma or GED? Tennessee requires one. I need an online school. Im n my late 40’s though.

I don’t know of a college that doesn’t require one or the other. Is there a reason you can’t take the GED?

@Willow613, having had one son who graduated from college in May, 2014 and one son entering college next year, I I can tell you that our experience has been that not even 1 school or employer has asked to see a copy of their high school diploma. They have been asked to see copies of their high school transcripts - which I had made. They were never questioned - not to our faces anyway! lol! They were professional looking. We used TranscriptPro which suited us well. In Maryland, our particular oversight issued them a diploma that for us served decorative purposes. In fact, I don’t think my oldest son could even tell you where his high school diploma is right now.

None of my children have ever needed their diplomas for any reason. The colleges only requested their transcript which I put together.

I didn’t bother making a high school diploma for any of my kids. I have never needed to show my diploma. My kids have not either.

The high school transcript is essential and is needed for applying to college and could also be needed later (so make sure to keep a copy). Make sure you have a transcript and keep a copy somewhere safe for the future in case it is needed.

A high school diploma is unnecessary.

Transcript, portfolio of work and recommendations matter far more than a home-cooked diploma. It can be fun to make to celebrate, but beyond that has no useful purpose. It’s much better to be straightforward and explain your homeschooling, then to try and pass it off deceptively as some sort of private school.
