My D just got home from Owl Weekend at Rice..and she has found a new home. She loved everything about the college.. the people, the place, everything. She said she felt completely at home there. My D is not one to get real excited about anything - she is always so hard to read. But not this time. We knew as soon as she got home that Rice was "it". She said a couple things that told us that this was definitely the place: "it was so weird being somewhere where everyone is so smart", "it felt better then when we visited DUKE" (for those of you who remember Duke has been her so-called dream school since..well.. since forever, LOL!)..so, guess the deposit is about to go in.. we are one very happy family here in PA. Texas......geez what can I say.. TEXAS, LOL! At least I know that she will be warm : ) For all of you who told me so many wonderful things about Rice.. well, you were right as always!! Thanks to all of you for support and kind words. Now, onto the next phase...

Congrats to your D! Now on to mattress pads and egg crate mattress toppers!

Wonderful news, Islandin! Funny how those "dream schools" have changing names as senior year rolls along.

Congrats! Your d. will absolutely love Rice! My s is finishing his freshman year, and has had an absolutely wonderful year. He has hosted many "prospies", including one from NY (Queens) over owl weekend, and every one has loved the school as much as he does. What college did your d. stay in? If you have any questions, feel free to ask!!

That is so great! Really happy for you guys! It reminds me of this time last year upon going back for accepted student events at my D's faves from her accepted schools and the idea was to figure out which one to pick (as she liked them all) and right ON campus when meeting her at the end of the accepted student event at Brown, she said, "this is it, I'm going here!" and I thought, I never thought she'd be deciding so soon and that she'd be going home and mulling all these final visits over but these visits did exactly what they were meant to do...help her decide which school felt "right" for her. And thus, I enjoy reading YOUR daughter's story because she had that same kind of "moment" and she is gonna love it next year!

Congrats and yes, onto the egg crate discussions for you, mom!
Susan

well we Houstonians and Texans know how to sell (snake) oil !!!!. Congratulations and am sure she will be happy here.

As an unhappily displaced native Texan, I would like to extend my warmest CONGRATS to your lovely daughter on her choice of colleges!! Wow! RICE! That is so fabulous~My cousin was a Rice grad and went on to get her PhD in math. She is now a professor at Tulane. I wish you daughter all of the very, very best for a immensely happy and hugely successful college career! ~berurah

jym: she stayed at Will Rice College.. she liked the set up but said it seemed REALLY laid back. She seemed to think that some of the other colleges might be a bit more fun..she hardly saw her host at all.. said that she seemed pretty busy but D ended up hanging out with four or five other "prosbies" which she said was probably better.. she even signed up for club soccer!
soozievt: WOW! you said it better than I did.. that is it exactly -a "moment" and she just knew! So you know exactly what I am feeling right now.. so darn happy for her. I never saw her so "content"..she said something else that made me KNOW this was the one..on the way home from the airport she said (so sincerely) "man I hate having to go back to school now.. I just wanna start college!" What a feeling. I am just so happpppppy for her!

lsandin-
I sent you a post on the Rice Owl weekend thread, so won't repeat it here. Suffice it to say, my s had a similar reaction to your d's when he finished his visit/tour/interview at Rice fall of his sr yr, and applied ED. He just knew-- it was home. And as a parent, I am so happy that he is so happy. I don't think he wants to come home this summer-- I find that I send him packages of goodies so (1) he knows we are thinking of him and (2) he'll call to say thanks!! Your d. will have a wonderful time!

Congrats! Doesn't it feel WONDERFUL to know a decision has been made? Sounds like she'll love it there.

My son just returned from Owl weekend at Rice and LOVED it, too. Started filling out the paperwork the minute he got home. He stayed at Will Rice, as well, but loved that laid back feeling. He actually felt relieved that he didn't have to drink to have a great time. Loved the Phils and the improv and thought the classes he attended were wonderful....super profs. Impressed with his intended department and future potential for jobs. It may be far away (we're on Long Island) but it sure is super to have him so happy! I obviously have to go find the info on mattress covers??

Congrats and welcome to you new Rice families. D is a soph in Hanzen college. Your kids will love Rice. Feel free to ask any questions, especially after the kids find out their colleges later in the summer. GO OWLS!!

Wonderful news, all those new Owls! So glad it sounds like such a great fit for your students: we're all very proud of them!

My H earned 2 degrees there (Baker College undergrad) and owes his long and full career to a great start courtesy of Rice. He came from a very poor rural TX family that could never had afforded to send him to college; without Rice's generous scholarships and great education, he would not have become the person he is today.

Hello from Houston! Rice is awesome! Only the cream get in, and I am so happy for your daughter. WE have IKEA here, and you can get everything you will need there (and save a ton of $). Ask anyone - it's on west I-10.

Lauras50 - I sent you a private message, check it out! :)

IKEA???????? Why was this never mentioned before!!!!! We may have to check it out. Just kidding. Congrats!!!!

Congrats Lsandin! Your D will keep the Houston population steady since Simba's S has decided to head to the North Pole, aka Princeton :) Seriously, I have only heard good things about Rice. I got interested in the school when looking for math websites for my S. One Rice prof, Cynthia Lanius, has a fabulous website.

lsandin---

Congrats, congrats! Bet you're glad the decision-making process is over.

Congratulations - Rice is outstanding! And in the prettiest part of Houston, too.

Sounds like we Houston posters need to get together and throw a welcome barbecue to the CC Rice group!

Invite me! Invite me! I'll drive down for it.
