It's down to the wire...Dickinson vs. TCNJ

My son has narrowed it down to Dickinson and TCNJ (to give you a clue into his thinking, he felt Lafayette and Gettysburg were too preppy/jocky). Aside from the obvious cost differential (although he did get a smallish scholarship to Dickinson) what are the pluses/minuses of each?

Are the professors truly accessible at both? Are there more full time professors at Dickinson?

The kids at TCNJ seemed genuinely happy. I'm also thinking that it's probably more economically diverse and there may be less pressure from a materialistic point of view.

I'd love/need some input?

My D at Dickinson has found the profs to be very accessible and loves a lot of them. Class sizes are small in her major, and she often sees her profs around the community (on campus and in Carlisle). Here is a page with some statistics on the faculty there:

[Dickinson College - Dickinson Defined - Faculty: Teacher-Scholars](http://www.dickinson.edu/defined/Faculty/)

Although I don’t know about TCNJ to compare. I just did a search to try to find a similar page, and couldn’t track one down easily. Since TCNH is a bigger school, it will have more instructors in general. But not sure of the background/ratios of degrees/ratio of profs to students.

It certainly isn’t very scientific, but Ratemyprofessor rankings overall for Dickinson are 3.64 (on a 5 point scale), and TCNJ is 3.04 :)

My doctor who went to TCNJ told me that she would not recommend TCNJ. It is very unsafe. She said her car was vandalized when she went and now the crime there is even worse. I’ve never been to either place but my son went to Dickinson and loved it. He loved the atmosphere. I would suggest at this point if finances aren’t an issue, then find out which place is a better fit. Afterall, it is all about FIT at the end. Your son has to be happy where ever he goes. If he is happy then he will have a great chance of succeeding. Also, the smaller schools definitely have professors that are accessible. So Dickinson would win over TCNJ on that point. Dickinson is more of a CTCL school (by Loren Pope).

I don’t know where anyone got the info that TCNJ is not a safe place. I have studied at TCNJ for 4 years and nothing major happens. It is a very safe school and the college atmosphere is excellent. The college has excellent professors and great environment. Also the price is great. The U.S. NEWS ranks TCNJ as the 4th best regional school overall.
