talk to the superintendent! have your mom talk to the superintendent!!
loll my school has the same policy but my teachers are sweet and let me by if i’m only slightly late.
good luck!!!

Alright here is the rules on absents and lateness.

Excessive absence will inhibit the academic growth of any student. If a student is absent far too often from school, his grades will automatically be dropped in all subjects by the following scale:

ABSENCE BEYOND 10 DAYS - NO GRADE HIGHER THAN 85%

These grades will be reflected in the marking periods only. Any variation of this policy is at the discretion of the Principal and/or Vice Principal for Student Affairs.

I wasn’t absent beyond 10 days. However, latenesses add up to absents. 5-10 days late is 2 extra absences. 11-15 is 4 extra.

Homeroom bell is at 8:10. I think I only had 2 latenesses after 8:10 .____.

To pea: excellent advice, thank you. I’ve calmed down quite a bit. Let’s see what my principal says when he contacts my mom. I’m willing to do anything for my grades. Community service, staying after school, weeks of detention.

I don’t understand why they would want to do this to me, too. It means I will receive less money and possibly be rejected to the schools I want. Doesn’t this reflect bad on the school?

Does this mean quarter or semester? The answer basically decides your fate.

The principal and VP mean that if you get them defaulted once, it stays that way in every quarter.

It’s an awful rule, I don’t get it. I can see why they dropped me the third quarter. But dropping me on the 4th is mind blowing.

OP: are you guessing about what the intended meaning is? Or did they explicitly tell you that?

Anyways, one could make a logical argument either way. Like at my school, we had to get report cards signed by parents every quarter (so teachers were required to mark us then). On the other hand, the only marks the counted were the semester grades. The language is vague at best. I don’t know how this would work out legally. But, you can make an informal argument (I’d recommend writing it, so emotions aren’t as involved) to the principal or superintendent.

And what if you were sick for 10+ days?

Nope, they told me that.

The language was vague. My principal told me to work hard and get my grades up for the 4th quarter. So I did that. All my 85’s were grades in the mid to high 90’s. If I would have known they would screw me over regardless, I could have saved myself plenty of time and effort <_<.

FERPA

“Parents or eligible students have the right to request that a school correct records which they believe to be inaccurate or misleading. If the school decides not to amend the record, the parent or eligible student then has the right to a formal hearing. After the hearing, if the school still decides not to amend the record, the parent or eligible student has the right to place a statement with the record setting forth his or her view about the contested information.”

^I agree that at the very least the colleges should know about this rule and why your grades are lower, maybe with your counselor backing you up in her report/rec. Make sure that you state, however, that you know you were in the wrong regarding the absences and that you worked hard to change that.

Wow, that really, really sucks, you have a reason to be mad.

It definitely is unfair. doesnt it seem like all the bad kids, no matter what they do, they still have another chance? Maybe for the good kids, people think, oh, if they can already reach such a high level, then they dont need any help.

Has a previous situation like yours happened before at your school?

I don’t see why someone’s grades should be reduced for absents and tardiness. They’re not related for us intrinsically intelligent people ;). That goes for missed homework, too.

Really though, if your principle made you that promise, he or she should’ve kept it. That’s just being rude.

Alright guys, took 2 weeks but heres the update. Not looking good.

I emailed the woman in charge of college prep at my school, the one who told my mom to tell me to email her.

So I addressed her in an email. What does she do?

SHOW IT TO MY PRINCIPAL.

Now, I didn’t say anything bad, at all. In fact PM me for the email I sent. The worst thing I said was when I addressed her and said I was disappointed at how the school admins were treating this by not sitting down with me and discussing it.

Anyway, my mom spoke to my principal. And heres what she told me:

Most of the conversation was him telling her my SAT’s were awful and wouldnt get me into CC. I have a 1600, and I took it early last year as a sophomore with no prep. Hopng to get that up, but SAT’s arent getting me anywhere, which is why I want at least my 4th quarter grades back.

My mom played the cards of how we were networking wth college admns. And how I was meeting with the founder and editor in chief of Bloomberg news at my job. This made him somewhat happier.

My mom said after he was strict and wouldnt change his mind, he finally loosened up and told her to call him back at the end of August.

He said he wanted to let us know why he is so angry. Mom and principal compromised on hearing both sides.

More talk about my SAT’s. Come on, are they THAT awful <__<. My mom feels he might have given in if they were better and my grades were higher as well. =[

Mom said he only spoke about not changing his mind at the start of the conversation. Then went on about SAT’s. Finally agreed to a meeting at the end. Yay, progress. He then went on how about wth my grades I wont get financial aid to attend a school like BU. With my grades undefaulted, I can get money. But with the defaults, of course not. But I will get plenty of money in need based aid (single mother, disabled). However, I need these grades to at least even have a chance of getting in.

As for me, I continue to make an impression at my internship (one he didn’t want me in the first place) and am doing very well. Hoping to get recommendations from the big shots in the company, wouldn’t hurt my case when meet my principal! Especially since it came as a shock I got the job.

Mom will wear a sexy shirt to the meeting, haha :]

Hopefully he can budge. Now the hard part is waiting another month and a half. If not, there is one person he answers to: the school president. Would I go there? I hope not. I want to get ths to be over with and rid my worries. So I’ll keep doing what I am doing and hope it is enough to redeem myself in his mind.

Also, fun fact on that rule: if your grades get defaulted to an 85, but you dont have a grade higher than that, your grades wont be defaulted despite absences/lateness. So a good who was absent/late more than I has a higher average than me despte me having 5 90’s.

-___-

Any other advice welcome. Thanks guys!

what do sat scores have to do with your grades? He has no business telling you that you won’t get into college with your sat scores. That’s no reason to not fix your grades!
It’s like he’s basically telling you “you’re already screwed b/c of your SAT scores, so we’re going to keep screwing you over by not fixing your GPA”

I would be absolutely FURIOUS if they were doing this to me. Totally unfair rule, in my opinion. Your grades should reflect your effort in the class, not your attendence.

and also not his SAT performance. mutually exclusive

Dang, I would be totally FURIOUS!!! That’s simply arragont, unethical, and rude. The guy told you to work hard, and you followed his instructions to the letter. That rule definitely has ambiguous language, should be clearer than that.

If you have a high-ranking offcial at your job attest to your strenghts/abilites and your SAT goes up (bogus point, brilliant kids even do poorly) then he has NOTHING on you. Go to the school prez if he continues this. Politeness, maturity, and thoughtful arguements will win this for you. I succesfully argued to my old principal why a student w/ a broken arm should be allowed to play in a dodgeball tourney (was an insurance liability) through this method. Obviously my case doesn’t matter as much as your cause.

I think if you have teachers, friends, parent, and GC supporting you, the principal looks like a DA. Best wishes man, this is ridiculous! LOL at your mom’s shirt comment :P!

You mean student government prez?

Anyway, the FERPA way is still a viable option.

^No, I thought that OP stated that there was a high authority than principal in school, just lower than superintendent. Anyway, his principal is being a wacko, he seems to really hate OP for no logical reason other than the guy was late excessively. He did his punishment, he should let him off the hook.

you do know its illegal to tamper with public documents?

this is a feasible lawsuit, if hes just stretching it longer and longer. It doesnt matter if you got 0 or 2400 on your SATs, thats your problem and responsibility. one of HIS & the school administration’s responsibility is to make sure you are fairly marked and graded.

Finally, did you sign an agreement at the beginning of the year? Does it say anything about defaulting grades? If it does not, then you vs. school could be a certain win. If it does, then that would suck.
