You have to apply for admission by Nov 1, and then after that you’re invited to apply for SSA. You can’t apply until after you’re admitted and invited to apply.

There is direct admit to Hutton Honors College - correct? As long as you have the GPA and test scores required??
@Jen136 - my daughter didn’t apply to the honors college and she received notification of her admittance from IU. It was nice not to have another application to complete.
@tsbna44 - I think others already answered your question. The first time we heard about the scholarship was in the acceptance envelope (big red IU said yes).
I have found their website “challenging”. Its definitely my least favorite accepted students portal since it is hard to find what you’re looking for.
I hope your daughter gets her merit info soon!
Did she hear from Honors college with red envelope or afterwards?
after you got email from kelley , did that change into portal as well?
@curlyQSF - she was admitted 10/14 and received the honors email on 11/6.
This is no different than the common app. If you did schools that require or have optional recommendations, you have this already. My daughter has two teachers and one community person. Common app is great because if a rec is needed or is optional, it’s already there. So IU is making you duplicate. But that’s their rules and hopefully my daughter will lose her “discomfort” because $10K still leaves about $28K in tuition. And that’s a lot.
Hopefully the SSA application is complete. At Colorado, you fill out their version of SSA - and then it gives you more scholarships and says - the app was for general ones but here’s another 11 we recommend and they are separate apply. Perhaps that’s their way of knowing whether you are really interested - making you jump through hoops. If you’re not interested, you won’t jump. That said, someone who is interested might back away.
Oh well, we don’t make the rules so will need to have to comply if we want a shot at attending.
Purdue (my daughter didn’t apply) - is $9K less. I wonder why??
Why not just ask the teachers to upload the recs that they already have written into the portal? Frankly this seems like it’s a bigger deal than it needs to be.
As I said, if she wants to go there she’ll need to play. Her concern is asking - it’s a confidence thing. Honestly, it’s really no big deal. It’s part of the teacher job and honestly - they probably like being asked. We’ll get it done for sure. It’s just a process improvement they can make. Thanks
I’ve wondered for months now why Purdue is 9000 less than IU! My guess–because of Purdue’s connection to science/tech/pharma perhaps the school gets grants or revenue from things developed there?
@tsbna44 @actbox1 Purdue has frozen their tuition since 2012-13 and have announced it will remain frozen through at least 2022-23. You can google it.
UMass admit here too! We haven’t visited Amherst though.
Just Dean’s. I think that’s the only scholarship that is in admit letters. The rest are through the SSA, I believe.
Yep. No need to Google because I know they’ve frozen it. I wish more schools would do that!
That wasn’t our point. The question is why is Purdue $9000 cheaper than Indiana University.
The IU website says that students who are direct admit to Kelley do not need to complete the SSA to be considered for all but 3 merit scholarships. Does anyone have any insight into this? My student would not qualify for 2 of the 3 scholarships requiring the SSA, but don’t want to be out of the running for all merit scholarships if he doesn’t complete the SSA. It’s all a bit confusing.
Same here. It was a nice Christmas gift, especially as it didn’t require another essay. Miami U’s 500-1000 word one about did son in. LOL!
Three of the scholarships offered through Kelley are geared towards minorities / people dedicated to diversity, and are a pretty substantial dollar amount. Scroll down on this site for the scholarships:
The other Kelley scholarships do NOT require the SSA unlike these 3, and are generally smaller awards made possible through alumni gifts.
The majority of the money that Kelley students get doesn’t come from these programs, rather it comes through the Honors College or the Hudson and Holland program (another minority scholarship). Honors college scholarships are generally 1-4k a year and Hudson Holland is around 7k per year for Kelley students.
If you want a shot at any high dollar amount scholarships, then the SSA is a must. I will say that it is much more difficult for non-minorities to get a lot of money from IU, so keep that in mind.
I’m fortunate enough to be a Latino in-state student so I was diligent in doing research on all the scholarship opportunities🙂
Yes - changed from Pre-business to Business Undergraduate in the portal after getting the Kelley email
