It's unfortunate that we still don't know the 2009-10 tuition rate since the Indiana state budget hasn't been passed. But in the meantime, could someone tell me how much more it costs to be in the Kelley Business School this year vs. the general university? I only recently saw information that suggested that there are different costs for different schools within IU, but I can't find anywhere how much variance there is. We're bracing ourselves for the first year of college expenses coming up around the corner and want to make sure we're basing our budget on the right general numbers. Thanks.

Kelley full-time undergraduate students paid an extra $540 a semester in 2008-09.

Thanks for the link. So here’s another question. Do they charge the same rate per credit hour for Business majors regardless of whether or not the course is in the Kelley School? In other words, would it cost an out-of-state student $1225 to take a 1 credit PE course (for example)?

I’m not sure if I understand your question. The $540 is a flat fee per semester for undergraduates who are taking a full-time load (12+ credit hours) and are admitted to the Kelley School of Business. The $540 Kelley undergraduate fee is the same for in-state and out of state students. It’s a flat fee you pay each semester you are a Kelley undergrad. Technically, you could not be taking any business classes that semester (for instance, if you are taking all COAS classes to help with the 27 credit hour core), but since you are admitted to Kelley, you will be paying the $540.

Here are less than full time rates, too
Business
Undergraduate
Enrolled in 12 and above total credit hours
$540.00 / term
Enrolled in 6 through 11.9 total credit hours
$430.00 / term
Enrolled in fewer than 6 total credit hours
$215.00 / term

I’ll try to explain it another way: The class/credit charges are the same no matter what school–ie Kelley, COAS, Jacobs, but Kelley admits are charged an additional $540 fee/semester Yes, the 1 credit PE course in theory would be $1225, but IU charges based upon the number of total credit hours. Exactly what those charges for tuition will be is what is not yet determined.

I see what you mean now. Thanks.

I did just look at bthomp1’s link. You were looking at graduate school costs and those are differentiated between schools.

The only problem with bthomp1’s link is that, through no fault of bthomp1, the link defaults immediately to show the charges for Summer 2009 (because that’s what classes are currently going on now). However, there is no per period charge for summer, only a charge per credit hour.

If you put in “Spring 2009” where it asks for “Term”, and leave the “Category” as “Credit Hour”, you’ll see that for any undergraduates currently in the school, the in-state tuition rate for 12 to 19 units was $3,684.15 and the out-of-state tuition rate for 12 to 19 units was $11,952.95 per term (no charge by credit unit unless you were above or below these number of units.)

Now leave the “Term” as “Spring 2009” and change the “Category” to “Program” and you’ll see the $540 per semester charge for the undergraduate business school (if you are taking 12 units or more) show up.

Since Tulare’s daughter is a direct admit to Kelley, and she is from out-of-state, she will be charged these two added together, plus some additional fees relating to transportation (the buses), medical, and an orientation fee (if this was not already paid for separately).

Gulp. So much for retirement. ;)
