My son has admission in Kelly school of business - honors college as well as in LSA at university of Michigan
It’s time to make decision and would appreciate input
LSA Umich
@KPAT81 The answer is …It depends. If he really wants to be in an undergraduate business school and you are in-state for Michigan, go to Michigan and then transfer to Kelley if he does not get into Ross. It’s much easier to transfer into Kelley, which has a much larger class size compared to Michigan. However, if he is OOS, then is he willing to take a risk to attend Michigan at over $55,000 per year with no guaranty that he will get into Ross? He will need at least an A-- average freshman year --not an easy feat–against stiff competition, and Ross has announced they will be accepting less freshman next year as they are increasing the number of pre-admits. This will decrease his chances. But not impossible. You have to weigh how much he wants to attend Michigan because it’s Michigan (best college town, wonderful facilities, best of academics and division 1 sports with lots of rah rah Go Blue! school spirit) even if he does not get into the business school. Does he have a backup major in LS&A that he thinks he would enjoy? If investment banking is his thing – one of Kelley’s several strengths, then I’d suggest Kelley because he’s in, it’s a sure thing. And Kelley is one of the top business schools. Also, I don’t know how costs and fit play here. Does cost matter? Michigan is more expensive than Kelley by about $11,000 per year. Did your son get scholarship to Indiana? That could tip the scales in favor of Kelley. And what about fit? Has your son visited both campuses? How did he feel at each? Fit is always a very important factor to consider. Probably the most important next to cost and affordability. They both have nice campus facilities, Big 10 sports, Greek life, college towns. But the composition of the student body is different. Many more OOS at Michigan than Indiana. Where did he feel more comfortable?
If you son wants to study business then I’d go to Kelley. I know too many people who went to UM LSA planning to transfer into Ross only to not get in. If your S is flexible as to his major then UM would be fine.
Getting into Ross will not be easy. Kelley is a very well respected business school. If the goal is a degree in business, I’d go with Kelley (especially since he’s also honors). I’d go with UMich if he’s in-state and not necessarily going to pursue a degree in biz.
Thank you …
Thanks a lot - we are out of state and no scholarship from u much
And nominal from IU
Thank you
U mich made it a lot harder to transfer into Ross and it seems almost impossible. As I stated earlier, go with LSA Umich as majoring in econ there will still be more reputable and if you network well you can do very well.
Is your son interested in graduating from Michigan LSA? The professional outcomes are excellent too. However the curriculum will be different.
So, I’d look at…
- costs (both UMichigan and IUKelley have excellent value but are they affordable?)
- curriculum : look at 4-year plans, mandatory courses, flexibility in adding a minor, whether he can skip classes thanks to AP credit and which ones, if some of the classes he must take are known as ‘weeder’.
You’re OOS for Umich? Costs will be, what, $250k total? (Upper division is more expensive).
Can you easily fund that? Will loans be necessary?
Thank you ! all feedback much appreciated… he is now also considering Northeastern business school— considering location and great CO-OP program, will appreciate hearing some thoughts on NU
