Ross vs IU-Kelley vs UM-Carlson

Okay friends, I’m honestly just confused.

Michigan is essentially my dream school, and it has become increasingly difficult to keep a clear head about things. I have already been accepted to Kelley (with a decent amount of scholarship money) and Carlson (where I would receive in-state tuition). I applied pre-admit to Ross, but I’m pretty sure I have basically no chance of getting in early. I have a decent shot at LSA, but I’m not sure if I would be able to attend a school without knowing if I can study business or not. For me, Michigan has the best atmosphere and the best business school, but would it be worth it to go there over Indiana or Minnesota where I know I can be in the program that I want and where I would be paying significantly less money? Any advice would be much appreciated

Between these 2 schools, its all about the ROI. They are both great schools .If you like Michigan then go for it. I would definitely go visit IU Bloomington before you make any decisions. It’s a pretty awesome option.

I like Ann Arbor too though. Its all about feel. My son got full tuition at both Kelley campuses and chose Indianapolis, much to my surprise.

Investigate and experience things. You might be surprised at the results.

@Goodkidsdad Thanks for the input. I actually have visited all three schools and liked Michigan’s atmosphere the best. I did visit IU in the summer though and would like to go back when the campus is more alive…

My son thought about applying to Kelley too. But in the end, we decided to stlck with Michigan. If he doesn’t get into Ross, then he will pick another major, like CS or data science.

You have to decide which is your top priority: studying business or going to UMich.

If it is of utmost importance to you to major in business, I would not advise going to UMich. I have a freshman there now. She has no interest in Ross, but she is taking Econ 101 as part of a well-rounded education. In the class of 400 students, she is just about the only one who is not interested in Ross. Actually, the class is no longer 400 students because dozens withdrew after the second exam. So they, obviously, cannot apply to Ross now. Half way through semester one, and they can’t get what they want. Would these students be better off at Kelly or Carlson? I think so, if they really want a business major. Same thing is happening with calc. Do you feel you can be a top student in econ and calc during the first semester? You can place out of the calc requirement if you have a 5 on the calc AP exam.

@brantly this is where I’m torn because I do want to study business, but I fell in love with UMich and I think I would take the chance because in the absolute worst case I can always transfer. I’m in AP Calculus AB right now and I am taking Accelerated Economics next semester, so I am skeptically optimistic about doing well in these courses next year. To place out of calc would I need a 5 on BC or would AB count as well?

A 5 on AB (or a 4 on BC) would only give you 2 of the 4 required math credits you would need w/o taking another math course higher than Calc 1.

Do you want to major in Business because you feel it opens more doors professionally, or because of the subject matter? If you are concerned about job prospects, an Econ major from Michigan will have similar job opportunities as Kelley students. From that point of view, Michigan over IU makes sense. But if you want to major in Business because you like the subject matter, IU is a safer option. Of course, that’s all “academic”. If the CoA at Michigan is prohibitive, IU all the way!

ooh @Alexandre That’s great advice. Love it.

True, but I was talking about the prereqs for applying to Ross. The weeder classes that cause so many to abandon their dream to apply to Ross.

^ I was answering GoPack87’s question. Alexandre’s advise is very good. If costs are not an issue and you are more interested in job prospects, trying for Ross may be well worth it. The “weeder” classes are not that bad if you are well prepared and actually put forth the effort. For example, did you take AP Econ in high school and find it easy and get a “5”? If so, you won’t find Econ 101 overwhelming at all.

@wayneandgarth my school doesn’t offer AP Econ. I am taking Accelerated Economics next semester, but I have no prior experience so I can’t say if it will come natural or not

Hey I am got direct admission in kelley (iu) and carlson (minnesota). I am planning to study management information system (mis) but I moght want to change my course to accounts finanve management or marketing. I am applying from india. Finance is bit a matter of concern.
I am really confused regarding which to choose. Can anyone help me out?

If you are sticking with MIS, MIS is Carlson’s strongest undergrad unit - ranks third by UNWR.

I am taking mis as my choice of course. But I may change it later to finance management or accounting but I am not sure.so which university should I choose

@gopack87 Coming from someone who used to work in Admissions at Ross, I can confidently say that companies view Ross and Kelley degrees very differently. Ross is a much more prestigious degree. Most students get admitted to Ross via Regular Decision during freshman year. Good luck!
