I've Always Wanted to Do This (How I Went From 165 PSAT to 2190 SAT)

This just shows how awfully inconsistent these tests are - yes I understand you guys studied more, but shouldn't the test show aptitude, NOT specific studying?

Common sense whistler. Get some.

I'm tired today, so i guess ill just drop off a simple analogy. A potential basketball prodigy that never got his hands on a basketball. But one day, mommy brings home a basketball and little jacky runs around dribbling the basketball. A week later, jacky becomes the best basketball player in his class!

Maybe that'll make more sense.

Whistler09, hates SAT much?????!

Oct 2007 SAT 1430
Oct 2008 SAT 2070

Zenbadabing - I won't stoop to your level of biting sarcasm, but I will extend your analogy.

I would like to ask, in your 16 or 17 or even 18 years of life, had you really never dribbled a basketball before?

Ren - I hate it's finicky nature. However it will help me get into college, because I scored in the 99th percentile (only took it once).

You won't stoop to my level of biting sarcasm? Haha. You're more confused than i thought.
Scoring in the 99th percentile, you must be a really smart guy! You obviously havent been living in a cave all your life, so 'll just assume you've been kept up to date and whatnot. Now, tell me whistler, what is the purpose of the S A T ?

200 Sophomore PSAT
209 Junior PSAT
2050 Junior SAT
2330 Senior SAT

I most proud of the fact that I went from 78 CR on sophomore PSAT to 780 on my senior SATs. I agree whistler, studying for the SATs is kind of stupid and unfair.

224 Soph PSAT
224 Junior PSAT
2330 SAT

im worried, what does all this consistency mean!?!!

^ Seems consistent to me. (Also, very good.) Most people do better on the SAT, since the PSAT has so few questions that the curve is ridic.

Anyways, @ Zenbadabing: I'm with Whistler here. Had you never taken a test before? I mean, no one in my grade knew anything about the PSAT when we took it sophomore year (except for the fact that it existed, which we'd known for approximately seven days -- and a few of us had taken a practice test the night before [that the school gave us]), but lots of people scored 220+ (I got a 234, but I guess I'm not a great example, since I was one of those who took the practice.)

I'm not undermining your achievement -- I think it's great and really impressive. Just, the basketball analogy has holes, and the test IS designed to be an aptitude test. :/

Actually, reading more carefully, uhh, zenbadabing, what kind of natural response is it to leave a test half blank just because you had never heard of it before? My argument doesn't really regard you. I'm only arguing about people who TRIED their first time and then studied their ass off to get more points the next time.

Yes! It's a soul buddy! XD I got a 166 PSAT as a rising sophomore and now I hit 2000 SAT as a new junior. Working on a 2200+ now, but this so proves that a huge score increase is possible! Congrats :D

Nice attitude changing kick in the butt those low PSATs. Must have woken up the keen intellect that was lurking in there someplace (no irony). Congratulations.

Why did i leave half the test blank? because i was a slacker, and i was tired. i dont get a kick outta taking a standardized test ya know?

Poseur, i have lost all respect for you. Let me deal with whistle boy first then i'll get to you.

First of all, whistler, you didn't answer my question. Stop changing the topic. Hey, you know what, i guess ill answer it for you since you seem to be having a hard time.

Now, poseur, your completely right. The SAT was initially designed to measure aptitude. However, College-board got ***pwned twice by individuals who have probably never aced that test. Now the SAT is just S A T. A test- a bad boy test that needs to get spanked. Now, lets not kid ourselves, the SAT does measure intelligence to some extent, and its obviously not the best indicator of college success. But now, in 2008, to call the SAT inconsistent simply because a ridiculously small percentage of individuals manage to improve by hundreds of points is ignorant. The national average in score improvement is only what, 10 points? As i mentioned before, i got a 121 in my PSAT, and i scored in the 40 percentile. Pathetic, i know. Now, i didn't know anything then. I never listened in math class, and couldn't do basic algebra to save my life. The test did its job, it showed me that i didn't know crap. I got my act together, and scored 2160 on my SAT's. I had MUCH more to work with, because i had begun paying attention to class- gathering the tools required to perform math and whatever the hell tests require. Now, did the SAT do its job? It sure did. Not only did it measure my academic improvement, but also my work ethics in someways. Now, if Collegeboard did not get owned by common sense, then i would be completely wrong. because then the SAT's would be, as you mentioned, inconsistent. Why inconsistent? because I'm not an idiot. Of course, i'm not completely right either. Tests are bound to have flaws because we make them, but to attribute its inconsistency to a extremely small population of able students and disregard the reality of standardized testing is imo pretty stupid if you ask me. Congratulations to everyone to did well on their SAT's!

I'm out.

Well, I respect you for doing so well and making such an improvement on your score. But it's okay if it's unrequited!!~

I didn't say the SAT was inconsistent. I just said that it was designed to be an aptitude test. Therefore, studying for it tarnishes the mystique a little, ya know? I don't have a PROBLEM with it; I just think it's kind of lame. That's all.

Again, great job getting your stuff together -- pulling yourself out of an unmotivated slump and doing really well academically.

Sorry, i overreacted. I just get a bit annoyed when people bring up the obvious. If the SAT isn't consistent, than nothing is. Its the most widely taken standardized test by high school students, and its really redundant to point out its flaws. I admit, i personally feel offended when the SAT and my Junior/senior year grades are the only numbers i have left to prove my self worthy of the nations most selective colleges. To call it inconsistent would be like telling me that even though i learned from my mistakes, it still doesn't show anything .

Happy Halloween.

Dude if you're gonna get mad about something, don't use your energy to tirade on an online forum.

Haha. Well, it sure beats using my energy to tirade in real life.

It doesn't matter where you are, if you disagree with something, speak up-but i live in a bad neighborhood, so that wouldn't be a good idea.

how do u do that?

How do you guys do so well?

I got a 166 on my PSAT, and about a hundred points higher in March of my junior year.

How is it possible to break 2000 afterwards....my most recent way I got around mid 1800's, which is only a 200 points increase.

I am trying so hard to break 2000, but I feel so hopeless-tips?

How do i do that? My teachers ask me the same thing. Maybe I'm just a good test taker. Work hard, study smart, and do everything to the best of you're ability. Thats all there is to it.
