I've always wanted to post a chance thread! Where else should I apply?

Here goes nothing.

Rising senior: looking to expand my college list a little bit. Limited to WI, MN, IL, IA schools.

3.7 UW GPA
Rank: 70/400--school doesn't weight for AP/honors classes. Competitive suburban high school.
Wisconsin
Male
Caucasian
Projected majors: Economics/Statistics or Business

ACT-31 (34 E, 32 M, 30 R, 27 S, 9 E)
Taken sophomore year-will retake September senior year (is it necessary, or have I been on CC too much?)

AP Exams:

Sophomore:
Euro (4)

Junior:
Stats
Calc AB
Lang
Macro
APUSH

Senior:
Calc BC
Lit
Psych
Physics: Mechanics
US Government
Micro? (possibly self study)

Will also have taken 5 years of Spanish

Notes: APUSH was taken at WCATY-ALP (akin to CTY) at UW-Madison in between my sophomore and junior year. I took AP Macro online through Wisconsin Virtual School, and possibly will take AP Micro through self study (not likely though.)

I missed almost 45 days of school my junior year; most of this was due to clinical depression (probably from looking at this site too much.) It’s impacted my grades somewhat, although not substantially (3.6 2nd semester compared to 3.8 otherwise.) I think it hurt my extracurriculars more so since I couldn't stay healthy consistently for athletics. I focused my energy towards my AP courses instead.

Extracurricular Activities:

WCATY-ALP (10th) 3 week camp at UW-Madison where I took AP US History (see notes).

Badger Boys’ State Nominee (11)

Academic ECs:

Choir: School has a very strong program. Toured Spain with them sophomore year.
Academic Decathlon: team leading scorer junior year.
Wall Street Stock Market Club (11-12)

Volunteer Activities

Helper at Vacation Bible School (80 hours total from grades 9-12)
Sing in church choir which leads Wednesday service (50 hours total)
LINK Leader

Athletics (grade)

Junior Varsity Tennis (10)
Freshman Basketball (9)

Employment:

Will work at parent’s real estate company during summer (20 hours/week)

Possibilities for additional extracurriculars next year (not for college admissions, just for fun!):

Cross Country
Forensics

Chance me for:

UW-Madison (1st choice)
Minnesota (Carlson)
St. Olaf (legacy)

Hmmmm…any other ideas? My parents are making me apply to 5 schools.

Is not being in the top 10% going to hurt me?

Comments/Questions/Concerns appreciated. I would love to hear your feedback!

I think you are a strong candidate for those schools. Maybe boosting your grades to get a higher class rank into the top ten the beginning of your senior year would help your chances even more. I’m sorry to hear about you previous clinical depression, and I do believe that this site can do that to you. Good luck!

Bump (normally I don’t bump things but I feel it’s ok here.)

So I’m a rising senior and i have a couple of questions

 1. does northwestern have early action? I know it has ED but im just curious
 2. would it be worth applying to northwestern? I REALLY want to go their communications school/ major in communications

GPA: 3.7 weighted

Classes taken: All honors and AP classes, by my senior year i would have taken 8 AP classes. As a junior i took 4

SAT superscore: 2160 but i want to take it again in October
( do you recommend ACTs if i don’t do well on my sat subject tests?)

SAT subject tests = math 2 and chem ( but i didn’t get the scores back, i am hoping i scored in the 700 range)

Extra Curriculars include: model un( officer for 3 years and I’m president now and i won an award my sophomore year for a paper i wrote), key club, volunteering in various places, singing, ive had two internships at a university, NHS, SHS, and some other stuff, too.

I ended up getting a lot of Bs in high school because a lot of stuff was going on that interfered with my performance in school. I’m really upset about that, and i’m hoping that i still have a fighting chance if I write a good essay. I’ve taken a large variety of classes too including computer science A ( a class which girls dont usualy take), so what do you think? Please let me know.

Also, i’m pretty new to this whole college confidential thing. How do i create a new thread?

Thanks so much guys!

There should be a button right in the chances forum for you to post a new thread.
And northwestern I believe only has ed.

one last bump
also might be considering Chicago, WashU, Coe if you guys think I have a chance. I guess I’m willing to take off the 4 state restriction limit for discussions sake. How high should I be aiming besides UW Madison/Minnesota?

Any other opinions?

University of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign

I lied…I’m bumping this one again. Illinois is a good idea.
I would like feedback on these schools:

Dartmouth (what am I thinking here? Even worth applying to if I get decent SAT II scores, say 750+ Math II and US History?)
U Chicago (mom has MBA from here)
Northwestern
Washington University St. Louis
Grinnell
Reed
UW Madison (grandparent legacy)
Minnesota (CSOM, IT, CLA)
Saint Olaf (double legacy)
Illinois
Coe
Knox (someone suggested this one to me via PM, along with Grinnell. Honestly, not a bad idea.)

reach/match/safety anyone?

Any feedback on my new list?

Bueller…bueller

I’d say you need to get that 31 a little higher or try your hand at the SAT for schools like Northwestern, WashU, UChicago, and especially Dartmouth. But for UW Madison, Minnesota, and St Olaf, you seem to be sitting well.

Thanks strat.

One last bump for any final comments, otherwise I’ll post another chance thread september/october when I have a new ACT score/SAT IIs/progress on new extracurriculars like Cross Country.
