Chances for a rising junior!!!!

I've got nothing better to do today, so I decided to make a chances thread, even though I don't graduate until 2010!! :D

Stats

Location- Rural Wisconsin, middle class family
Gender- White female
GPA- 4.0 UW (assuming I keep my grades up for junior/senior year), school doesn't weight
Class Rank- 1/216 (class size will be down to maybe 180 by graduation, though)
ACT- 36 composite - 36E, 36R, 34M, 36S, essay - 8 (ouch!! :D)
PSAT- 218 - 79CR, 75M, 64W
SAT IIs- US History and Math IIC- just took in June, expecting great USH, not so great IIC (didn't prep at all)
APs- sophomore -APUSH - still waiting on score
next year (junior) will take Calculus AB, Biology, English Language, and US Government.

My school only offers 5 AP classes, and I will have taken them all by the end of my junior year. Normally, that is impossible to do, but I'm a year ahead (by my school's system) in every subject. So, senior year, I will be taking 18 credits at UW LaCrosse (the school district will pay for 18 credits, no more than that). My college classes will likely be: Calculus 2, Calculus 3, Linear Algebra with Differential Equations, Macroeconomics, and Comparative Political Systems.

My academic weakness is that I am only taking 2 years of a foreign language, because the teacher's can't teach and I haven't learned anything. In German 2 this year, we didn't even learn past tense. In college, I would love to take Arabic or Latin.

Projected ECs

Girl Scouts- 12 years involved, Bronze Award, Silver Award, Gold Award, completed Counselor-In-Training 1 and 2 (leadership). Might work as a camp counselor between junior and senior years.

Sunday School teacher- 5-6 years as Computer Lab teacher

Track and Field- 1 year JV, two years varsity (will have to quit during senior year because of college classes :()

Academic Decathlon- 3 years

Band- flute for 7 years, piccolo for 4, piano for 10
-1st chair and section leader senior year
-State Solo/Ensemble qualifier/participant 3 years (hopefully !!)
-possible drum major senior year

Show Choir- 2 years (I am probably the only female baritone singer that you will ever meet :D)

National Honor Society - will run for officer

Schools

Prospective Majors - Math and Computer Science

I want to go to a large school that will give me a lot of merit money, because my parents are already paying for my sister to go to a LAC. I want a large school because I am sick of being stuck in a small town with no diversity and little opportunity. My (small) list of schools:

Matches
University of Michigan (Honors Program)
Michigan State (Honors Program)
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
Penn State (Schreyer Honors Program)

Reaches - (I most likely wouldn't attend if accepted, unless a lot of FA is offered. I want to go to grad school, so I would love to go to one of these for that.)
MIT
Caltech

Safeties
University of Wisconsin - Madison (Honors Program) - in state

If you have any suggestions on colleges I should look into, thank you in advance!!!

your gpa, test scores, and class rank are very impressive. Your ec's are also very good. And you're definitely in the running to become an NM Finalist. That could open up more doors for you, and could expand your list. You are very competitive for all your matches and safeties. I hope you get into MIT or Caltech though. They need more female baritones in those schools :) Good luck book_worm.

I think you have a great shot to get into every single school on your list except for the reaches.

It is interesting (and maybe a little bit ironic) that the two reach schools you want to attend are schools where mathematics are super-dominant. On your ACT, your math was your weakest subject, on psat it was your second weakest subject, and you don't believe you did well on Math IIC. Just keep in mind that there are students admitted (and denied admission) to MIT/Caltech with perfect scores in standardized test math. As a whole, your resume looks pretty good, but math-specifically, maybe not so much.

In summary, I wouldn't say you are in for sure (which is why they are reaches, right!), but you have a fair shot at MIT/Caltech all things considered. Make sure you do amazing in AP Calc this year. I also see you are taking a ton of math classes in senior year. That should help a little bit, unless you totally bomb them!

You also mentioned that your one weakness is that you could only take two years of a language. Have you ever considered Keystone National HS. It is a correspondence system. I have read mixed reviews about the program, but it is nationally accredited (some students who received diplomas from KNHS have been admitted into Yale and Stanford!) I believe I have heard that there are no deadlines for assignment submission, so you could probably fit it into your busy senior schedule. While it is self taught, you could probably do better than the classes at school! They have a ton of language courses, some all the way up through AP.

You have great stats and will have a great chance at the tech schools being a high stat girl from the rural MW.

The only suggestion I have for you is to really work on your writing to bring it up to the level of your other skills-it's easily done and so important.

considering you are only a sophomore...so far, so good...but a lot could change by junior year, sometimes for the better! Keep gpa up, get a nice SAT I score, and you'll be well off
