I just got my letter from Barnard today saying my application have been deferred to be re processed for spring. What does this mean? Is it basically the same thing as being rejected? I applied to early decision in November. :(

It means that they will consider your app with the regular decision applicants, and you'll be notified of their decision when the RD applicants are notified. Kind of a "maybe.'

It just means that they want to see your first semester grades, and see how you compare with the rest of the applicants. You still have a chance, it's just like applying RD.

and the plus side is, now you can compare fin aid packages:]

but i've heard of people who've been accepted after being deferred! so don't lose that hope! call Barnard and ask them what the weakest point of your app was, and update your resume, get another rec, etc. you can still make it--good luck to you!

thank you guys so much for your replies.
Someone said i should write a letter to the admission board.
What should i say in this letter? just regular, hi i really want to go to your college, here's my information?

Writing a letter is good as long as you have something new and different to say. Being deffered means they were not absolutely sure Barnard was the best "fit" for you, and you for Barnard, so now your job is to convince them that it is. Have you done anything different since you sent in your application? Do you have any new significant experiences or accomplishments to tell them about? Make sure your school sends them your latest grades and, is it possible to get any additional recs from teachers or others?

If Barnard is, indeed, still your first choice, then your job is to let them know that. And also, find a "backup" school with which you can be happy and go ahead and apply there. Just to cover your bases.

I know this is stressful, but trust that it will work out!

Best to you!
