Is the kid taking MVC smarter than the kid taking AB? Maybe, maybe not.

That's the whole point. Maybe the OP is just as smart as her peers, and maybe she's not. But clearly she's in more of a position to know than you. It seemed sort of arrogant for you to contradict her when you don't even know her.

P.S.

My post was not arrogant in the slightest. It was positive and encouraging. :)

It's not that you are not as intelligent as your peers; it's just that you were behind when you entered college. From what I have heard, by junior year, everyone is essentially on a level playing field--excluding the geniuses. It's just a fact that some kids enter college ahead--but it doesn't mean they are smarter.

Anyway, I doubt many of the people you say are more intelligent than you are would have scored a 1990 on the SAT if they came from your household and went to your school. You've done good kid. "

I agree with NewJack.

Also, the current SAT doesn't measure IQ. It has a high correlation with income level. That's because people of higher income can afford to get tutored for the SAT, are likely to attend excellent schools, and are likely to have educated parents who can help them with schoolwork.

Your attaining what you have done -- including your grades at Harvard -- may indicate that you are MORE intelligent and are more motivated and resilient than are the people whom you're assuming are more intelligent than you are.

I might say that by junior year (ie once you're past intro classes) it doesn't matter who took which APs in HS. It's definitely not true that everyone's on a level playing field though. Some people are smarter, some people are not. That doesn't change.

Agreed. I accounted for that too earlier. I said everyone was essentially on a level playing field and I excluded geniuses from my generalization because they are an obvious exception.

glad to see that there is appreciation in the OP. Congrats on your success this coming year, and as someone who has had some struggles in life, I understand just how difficult it can be to overcome the obstacles that you described.

I do however want to make a comment about what someone said above. About AB Calc vs. MVC. There are a plenty of high schools in this nation that don't give opportunities to take MVC your senior year of high school, but that doesn't mean they are underfunded or on probation. Additionally, I guarantee that some of the kids in said high schools, taking AB calc, are probably ten times smarter than the kids taking mvc. Intelligence isn't a function of knowledge, its an indication of your ability to learn.

you really remind me of the book, Cuando Era Puertoriquena.
Very inspiring story, I love the feeling of getting over those boundaries that latinos normally struggle to get over.
