i've started to hate the dorm so much that i wanna move out. advice plz..

So, it's my second quarter living in a dorm. What I've been putting up with is all the disturbing noises that people make, both on the second floor and in the hallway. the room above me is the most annoying. they always wake us up in the middle of the night and we can't go back to sleep until they stop whatever they're doing (can take up to 2 hours before they're quiet and i can sleep). i told my RA about it but it hardly solved the problem. and the girl who lives in a single next to my room is so loud. she always comes into my room to talk to my roommates. so basically, i can't concentrate when i study. but then if I move out my roommates will have to pay at the double room rate instead of tripple, which is what i'm concerned about. it will make me feel guilty. what should I do? I really wish I hadn't applied for UC owned dorms in the first place... i'm getting more and more stressed not because of my courseload (21 units) but because of the disturbances =(

perhaps study at the library since they have a 24 hr study room available for everyone like you who cant study at dorms due to disturbing noises/etc....

At UCSC, I am kind of in the same situation as you. My floor seems to be rowdier than most, and my roommate supplies the alcohol, so people are always knocking on the door.

Like the above poster suggested, I find the library a great place to study. I go there often and tend to see similar faces each time I go. I think many students are in our situations. I actually never have went to my R.A, but he is so lax that I doubt anything will come of it. If you are very serious, you should go higher than your R.A. to solve the problem.

Best of luck!

thanks =). i've used the library for studying a couple of times, but it's kinda far away from my dorm so i don't really like it lol. but i guess there's no other choice.

actually, my house just got a house probation because of the noise and alcohol problems. i just found out at the house meeting tonight that so many ppl are in the same situation as me, and that our house is the messiest. someone said that they'd even thought about changing houses.. and those dumbasses didn't even apologize for causing the trouble

do you live at FT ? .. ... goddam fire alarm @ north tower ;[

no i live in Manzanita, lol.

about two weeks ago the fire alarm went off around 2:30 am (just when i was about to fall soundly asleep) and we had to go outside. no one really knew what happened. but we had to stand in the cold for like 20 minutes. it really sucked =(

I'm in Anacapa...and we had that too... along with Santa Cruz (dorms-not the school) 2 hours before us...so I think they might be drills if pretty much every dorm had it.
This is the first time I've heard of Manzanita being too loud...
are you extra-extra-sensitive to sound?

two nights ago i finally went upstairs and tell them to turn off their music. one problem solved.

I pretty much hate anything that's loud, not just loud people but also loud music and all kinds of stuff that have sound lol, even the sound of someone opening the door too harshly. maybe because I grew up hearing my parents fight all the time when i was a child. not just yelling but a volume higher than the normal speaking volume already bothers me.

and recently as i'm sick i've noticed that my ears are super sensitive. it's like everything around me has gotten louder. i even have to cover my ears when my roommate coughs and in a lecture today when the professor was showing us a VDO clip.

I hope my living condition will improve as my health gets better (hope it gets better!). maybe then i'll be able to put up with all this..

earplugs work well.

i do use earplgs, every night. i use them in the day sometimes too but they don't help much since the noises are too high.

one of my roommates snores. freaking annoying. sometimes its so loud that i can hear it through the earplugs =S. makes me wanna scream

Have you gone to the second floor of the De Anza building? They have a number of study rooms up there.

yeah i've seen the study rooms there. maybe i'll go there so i don't have to go all the way to the library. i went there once, to go to use one of the study rooms there, and then the building door was locked so i couldn't go inside. that was so weird since normally it would be always open. it pis-s-ed me off so i didn't go there again lol. maybe i should try going there this weekend.

I suggest u to go to san raf study rooms (Im always there) or near manzanita theres a builiding with more study rooms (next to carrillo)

another option is to call the front desk and complain. usually they'll send someone.

Another option is the loma pelona center

thanks ppl. i went to study in de anza yesterday. i'll try loma pelona sometime. de anza study rooms are often full.

Anytime people are keeping you up when you’re trying to sleep just tell your R.A. I think since it’s winter quarter you can get written up without a warning so if it’s after 9 just notify your R.A. As for studying, I live in Anacapa with really loud roommates. I only get studying done in this random room no one uses in the front lobby. Works perfectly…
