Hi, I’m a sophomore in high school. I was wondering, so many people apply to the Ivies with high sats, gpa, class rank, and varsity sports. Yet, I have been playing table tennis for 3 years and is currently ranked nationally for my age group. I have also won a few events in tournaments, but have not yet won anything big. Will the top colleges look at this and see something special?

that could get you into an Ivy.

I started my own company a year back and it's pretty large now... I am certain to get into Harvard or Cornell with my extensive resume too.

You know... it seems people are so uptight about a damn score on some standardized test, when really it is WHAT YOU have done that you HAVE SUCCEEDED in away from the books. That is pretty sick though to be ranked nationally for table tennis... ever thought of going to China and competing? :D

I have to concur here. Anyone can get a top score, and when you have a thousand people with the same top scores and leadership in boring school activities, I think that exceptional things out of the classroom show particular initiative. I bet they would even make up for a bad score or two :)

subjective factors will get you a long way in selective school admissions (essays, EC's, recs, supplements, awards)

but in the end, we all know that high scores and great GPA can in fact get you into awesome schools

A rockstar GPA and high SAT score and your race is 75% of your application.

but what about people who don't put their race down...after all, the ethnicity box is optional, and what if their surname is not indicative of anything either...

then your white.
