Essay: Good, worried that I missed grammatical errors
Recommendations: Very good (I got mostly "the best I've seen in my career" checked from teachers/counselor, one or two "Outstanding")

I also got a supplemental recommendation from the Governor (of the state)

I'm sending a CD as well from a concerto competition

I know its a reach for many of the schools up there, especially with my test scores. But I am at least 100 points above the average for the SATs and about 9-10 points above the average for the ACTs at my school.
What do you guys think my chances are?? Please give me an HONEST opinion.
Thanks for any help!

bump, can someone please help??

Come on....... :(

ur right...ur standardized scores are low and ur probably Korean already. However, distinguish urself somehow!

Well, you have to understand, first and foremost, that a 1300 SAT is not "bad". Nonetheless, it does cut you short of most, if not all, Ivy league schools. However, your rank is amazing, your EC's are outstanding, and your gpa is really good. There is no excuse for grammatical errors on a college essay. That is something you could have easily fixed, and it is far too late now to complain about that. If I may ask, where are you from?

I thought you were joking man........y does everyone on here have to be so perfect?!?!?

I'm from New Mexico

which is somewhat an advantage---colleges want kids from all 50 states, and many kids just stay in-state. Only 50 people from the graduating class last year went out of state.

So do you guys think that a school like Yale and Stanford is too out of reach??? I've been thinking--and I don't know if I'll be happy at a school where I am the "dumbest" one there. All my life, I've been at the very least, well above average. I'm scared I'll be totally lost and fall behind---any advice?

BUMP--no one seems to reply to these things anymore

How about some california schools? You live relatively close to california (not really)...
-Pepperdine
-USC (University of Southern California)
-Scripps

Start out w/ those
see whic ones you like

Pepperdine--I don't think I'd be happy there--- one of my friends visited it over the summer and she said people were too "plastic."
USC-I've lived in LA and want to go somewhere different
Scripps-I've also lived in Claremont--too small, and I don't want to go to an all women's college-

haha, i'm so picky--what about the schools that i listed above? can you rate individual schools?

haha wow you've lived all over the place!! well, i can't rate right now (i live in rhode island.. it's 1:30 in the morning here, i have school tomorrow!! err.. today... lol) but i'll gladly do this for you tomorrow.. ugh.. i mean later today..

haha, thanks for your help! And sorry i had to post this, I read your other thread about how irritated you are about this whole "rate me!" thing. I'm just very unsure because I have NO safeties that I can think of except UNM--which is a last resort.

I would REALLY appreciate it if some people gave some advice

Hey, I'm back again (it's 2:45 in the afternoon here).. Ok, so you want a breakdown of each of the schools that you have listed...
These are your (extremely unorthodox and premature) guesses as to your chances at each school (these should, in no way, hinder your selections...)
1.) Yale - Definitely a huge reach, but if you get an interview in and show that you are really interested, they may put in some consideration.. don't count on it though.
2.) Stanford - Same as Yale.
3.) UT Austin - I don't see why not..
4.) UNM - yet again, I don't see why not.
5.) Rice - a reach, but you seem to have most of the credentials..
6.) Boston University - A good fit for you
7.) Trinity - Between a good fit and a stretch..
8.) NYU - Yet again, between a good fit and a stretch.

You said you were looking at UNM as a safety... way TOO much of a safety for you... how about University of Arizona? It's better than UNM..
*UT Austin is a good safety.

Hey how are you doing BLH! Haha.

Anyway, what are your grades in AP Calc and AP Physics so far? What easy courses, huh, especially that AP Physics, to me, it's just a bona fide Physical Science II (funny though since I'm doing better in calc). Whatever.

BU...my dad and aunt graduated from that place. My aunt tried to go back for her graduate degree, she graduated valedictorian from BU...they rejected her. Therefore, that may be a reach. Yale is a definite reach since their SATs tend to be in the upper 1500s range. Trinity and Stanford are high, but not out of the question. I have a feeling you'll get into at least one of your reach schools, and you will definately get into those miscellaneous state universities.

thanks for your help, snp2k and blh53! That really scares me about BU that they didn't accept her because I thought of it as a match school...

Dude,

Honestly I think Yale and Stanford are big big reaches. You need matches, you have this HUGE gap between Yale and Stanford and BU/ UT. Rice is your only match. This strategy seriously makes no sense. Look into Northwestern, WUSTL, Cornell, and maybe as a reach Brown (more forgiving on SAT).

Thanks for your honest opinion--Stanford has been my "dream" school for as long as I can remember, and it is just unfortunate that my SATs were that low....Test scores aren't everything but they are so important at these schools--If I had maybe just 100-150 more points, I think I would actually be at the competitive level.
