Does anyone know if Ivies want to admit good cheerleaders? I kind of assume there isn't any hook there.

if you won like some important awards, maybe. i mean cheerleading is an important part of american high school life. i would think being a cheerleading captain or something adds significantly to a person's EC factor.

oh yes it is!! I haven't told my favorite college success story in years- and its too late now
but friend of friend story
solid LI kid with real good stats (4.0 1400-SAT old scoring) but similar stats to alot of other LI kids. No real big EC's EXCEPT Cheerleading.
kid gets into Columbia. Family felt it was definitely because of the cheerleading background.
Just remember all the Ivy Leagues have sports teams. All need cheerleaders. This might not be a real popular EC for the kids who are applying to Ivy's. So if your kid has "Ivy" stats and has a cheerleading background, it can very well be viewed as a Hook.
Go for it!!

Boy cheerleader or girl cheerleader? I would think boy cheerleaders would be special; unfortunately its one of my girls.

It was a girl cheerleader. but boy oh boy!! That may be even a bigger hook.

I think you have nothing to loose by trying.
Now I really do not know whether they made any formal or informal contact with cheerleading squad or whether her EC spoke for itself.

remember- the kid did have the basic stats for Columbia- but it may have made her application look a bit more unique to the admissions committee.

It's only a hook if she's really, really, really, really...hot. Like if she could make the team at Ole Miss, then it would be a hook.

My D was a cheerleader in h.s., and I'd say she knows at least 10 other girls at Harvard who also cheered in h.s. Did it help them get in? Who knows? I figure it was just one more facet of an otherwise well qualified candidate. I wouldn't say it was a "hook" in the sense that it made a significant difference in admissions.

I know it's a good EC; I just don't know if the cheerleading squad at Ivies has any pull with the admissions office...probably wishful thinking...I'm paying a lot for her flipping lessons so it would be nice if there was some kind of reward.

I believe the Harvard cheerleading site specifically stated that it had no pull with admissions. It's not a varsity sport there, so cheerleading won't overcome low stats the way football could. I expect the other Ivies are the same. Your daughter could certainly contact the coaches at the schools she's interested in or at least check out the websites.

A few years back, my husband spotted a cover story in Cheerleader Magazine (or American Cheerleader? or something like that) at a doctor's office that featured cheerleaders of the Ivy League. Not sure if the library might carry that, but your daughter might find it interesting. From what I remember, Penn had the most competitive squad; Brown probably the least.

Lots of ECs that don't recruit or have any "pull" may still be helpful in creating the full picture of who your daughter is, and that may help your daughter get in. That said, I hope she's enjoying it, because it's not like it's the ticket in anywhere.

Her cheer coach passed out a list of colleges that give scholarships for cheerleading (we're in New York, not Texas). I'm sure it isn't complete but they were "the schools you've never heard of" and the average award was about $300. Oh well.

Cornell seems to take its cheerleading (and its marching band) more seriously than any other Ivy. As you are in NY, certainly worth a close look.

My english teacher was a cheerleader at Columbia.

Molliebatmit was an MIT cheerleader...I'm still reeling from the fact that there is such a thing.

^ Yes, indeedy:

About Us: MIT Cheer

MIT cheer looks great!!!!

I didn't know MIT had a football team.

Pretty scary: nuclear physicists by day, cheerleaders by night! :)

Here's the Penn cheerleading site:

If you Google the rest of the Ivies and "cheerleading", you can see their sites, also.

One thing to note: Unless things have changed recently, cheerleaders at Ivies are expected to actually lead cheers.

Not a "hook," but it would stand out as a rather unusual EC in an Ivy-applicant crowd (as opposed to, say, debate team).

SBmom...no, lots of Ivy applicants are cheerleaders; she's just very passionate about it. Hard to give stats to a cheerleading coach, not like she has a batting average or something. Must get professional to film her (she's a freshman in hs so I have time)
