I'm a rising Junior with a 6:38 2k. On practice SATs I've been scoring in the 2100-2200 range. So far, I've only taken one SAT II, and that was a 770 on Biology E. As far as grades are concerned, my school doesn't rank, but I should be somewhere around the top 10-20 percent (competitive school, tough workload - at least 8 APs by graduation). I would like to be recruited by an Ivy, perhaps Dartmouth or Penn. What do you think my chances of an OV/Likely Letter are?

Looks good to me, so far. Hang in there.

I miswrote in my first post. My 2k is actually 6:28.

ian123,

My two cents…do a search on posts by “Oldscarecrow”. He had an intimate knowledge of Ivy crew and what it took. I haven’t seen him post in quite a while. People come and go on this site, but he certainly left some valuable info behind. If my son was looking at crew that is where I’d tell him to start.

Thank you, fenwaysouth. I’ll check him out.

ian, your stats look very good to me. I am not sure what your height/weight is, but you are already in a very good range. The Penn heavyweight coach told my son that the average recruit for last year had a 6:25 2k, and about a 700 on all sections of the SAT. Keep up the good work and I think it looks very promising for you!

Thanks, carolinab. I’m 6’3" and 185 lbs, so I’m definitely going to be a heavyweight. Do you know when Penn recruits are expected to have a 6:25? Is this in September of their senior year or towards the beginning of Junior year?

I would think probably the summer going into senior year. If you could get to that point in early Spring of your junior year, I think you will really catch the coaches’ attention. My son (a rising senior) started filling out recruiting forms and emailing coaches in January of Junior year, but the contact really picked up in Spring. Check out “tier one athletics” blog- you can google it. There is a lot of great info for recruiting timelines, etc.

Is 6:25 the “magic number” for all the top DI programs?

I wouldn’t know if that’s the magic number. Offhand, Penn was the only school i remember which gave us an “average” 2k for their heavyweight recruits (some will be faster, some slower). Some other D1 schools may have different goals. When you start contacting coaches, you can ask them directly. My son decided to focus on getting recruited as a lightweight, so we didn’t get too much info on heavyweight recruiting. Last year there were lots of rowing parents who posted here, and if you enter “heavyweight recruiting”, you may find more info. But I do think you are looking very good so far!
