Actually I’ve always heard that AP scores don’t really help your application, particularly to “elite” schools. I’m sure that there are posters here more familiar with Ivy League schools who can confirm this.

From what we are told, AP scores count in the big picture when they are evaluating a student. Example - let’s say your SAT score was on the lower-end of average for that school’s competitive pool, but you had almost all 5s on your APs and you did very well on your subject tests. Then that is a positive boost. But if your SAT test scores were on the lower-end of average for the school AND your APs were 2s and 3s, and you didn’t report any subject tests … well…

I have read (Hernandez, A is for Admission) that the Ivies calculate an “academic index” for each student comprising SAT/ACT, SAT subject tests, and class rank/GPA. AP test scores are not part of the calculation but would certainly be considered.

There is a link to an academic index calculator on the home page of CC. It uses the Ivy League formula. Max score is 240. Aside from that they look at the other usual suspects, including AP scores, academic rigor, ECs, leadership, essays, etc. But scoring adequately on the academic index is important. Your SAT score certainly helps!
