I suspect that your GC isn’t thinking this aspect of the process through very carefully. If the kid with an early acceptance in hand keeps the other apps in place and collects more acceptances in the RD round, the ones s/he doesn’t choose won’t go to waste or otherwise remain unfilled. If the kid abandons those slots early they will be filled in the RD round. If the kid abandons them late they will be filled from the wait-list. Either way they will be offered to some other qualified, deserving kid who applied.

These highly-selective colleges are very much in demand. They are not going to leave unfilled gaps in their incoming freshman classes.

I didn’t know that Black kids are the only ones that were discriminated against! How enlightening! Well, I guess we can forget the Chinese Exclusion Act, the Jewish quotas of the 1900s, Japanese Internment, and the Nativists that protested East European immigration. Those were definitely not instances were other, “privileged” races were treated as “sub-human”! Wow, I did not know that everyone that applies to Ivy Leagues are privileged white kids that go through no challenges! And that you had such great insight into others’ lives to be able to judge whether or not they had gone through hardship! Was it the eyes? Was it when you shook their hands and found them not calloused?

And you went through slavery too?? Wow, you must’ve lived for a long time. Ditto for every Black applicant out there. To live through slavery and then have to go get high grades an SAT scores is truly a great hardship!

Since I am an Asian, I live in a utopia without suffering just like every non-URM race out there! Would you like to pay me a visit in my mansion with limitless resources? Or the mansions of my many rich neighbors? Thank you for outlining my privileged life; I never knew how good I had it!

It really is ridiculous how so many people cannot see or are unwilling to see blindingly obvious truth. Why? Why are people unwilling to see? I guess it is a case of Plato’s cave where the prisoners are not willing to leave…

I think what everyone is failing to understand is that all these “hooked” students (besides some of the varsity athletes) have the SAME standards as the non-hooked applicants. The only difference is that in deciding between the two, the hooked student will stand out more.

Being an URM does not exempt you from high academic standards.

@coureur I think that GC’s beef is that the runner-up in the waitlist probably would have wanted an acceptance rather than a waitlist letter. It prevents another kid from worrying over acceptances.

@kerkolus Did you know that some minorities are treated better than others? Have you ever noticed that there are opportunities for those minorities too but everyone ignores it so they can just blame black people as always Did you know America has a culture of anti-blackness, the entire world has a culture of anti-blackness?? Did you know the majority of black kids feel discouraged/hate the color of their skin because we’re constantly dumped on by every other race??? Did you know that in the black community, the effects of slavery have not diluted a bit!! Did you know if you ask a dark skinned young black girl if she likes the color of her skin and wishes to be lighter that she will most likely say yes? Did you know that institutionalized racism has placed many black Americans in a runt of poverty and anyone who’s been poor knows it takes a miracle to get out without aid from a friend/ relative?? Did you know this is only 5% of the issues Black Americans face??? Did you know I know Black people aren’t the only ones who face racism? Did you know I know all people of color face racism?? Did you know that people of color may face racism in different ways on different scales though??? Oooooo

Be honest. You don’t care. You’re a racist! Accept it! Maybe the reason colleges will reject you is because of your ugly personality. Look at you. You’re pathetic! You have obviously not done any research on race relations int he US or you wouldn’t be spouting your ignorance. I don’t care about you. I’m black and happy and will not feel ashamed or feel pity for your likes

@scahopeful stated, “Being an URM does not exempt you from high academic standards.” For sake of argument, let’s take that at face value.

Then it should also be true that just because you are a URM those high academic standards should not be presented, as if they are better than others who are as high or higher.

That is the issue that everyone is expressing displeasure with.

^ She’s a bit off but she speaks the truth. It proves that no matter what POC, especially blacks, achieve, someone will always water it down to Affirmative Action. As if we need help being better than whites!

It would be nice to keep the name calling in check as to avoid getting the thread shutdown. No need for it. We can disagree as much as we like, but no need to get uncivil. Different points of view are OK to have, as long as the arguments are well-explained.

@awcntdb the fact is: If you’re an URM, you’ve probably had to deal with a lot more than the pirivileged white kids with your exact stats i.e. racism. If you’re an URM and manage to excel despite the mountains thrown in your path because of your ethnicity, that just may blow the typical rich white kid’s achievement out of the water

Sure. I’m positive that any applicant would prefer an outright acceptance over an acceptance from the wait-list. Who wouldn’t? But I balance this against the high-achieving kid’s legitimate desire/need to collect all his/her acceptances in order to carefully consider all options - both educational and financial. Plus, I think any emotional damage inflicted the other kid due to being wait-listed will be moderate and short-lived. Kids are young and mostly very resilient.

@jumbatales
You sure are bitter. To count, I’m a “racist”, I’m “pathetic”, I’m ignorant, I’m “trash” and unworthy of pity. Darn. Guess I should just lock myself in a room and not come out because I might poison people’s days. From that outburst I’m not sure who’s personality is uglier. Luckily, my arguments are logical and coherent enough for me not to use ad hominem attacks and insults to try to make my point. So continue calling me names, I guess. It just makes you look sillier.

You really like hyperbole. 5%? Come on man. You basically tried to list every complaint you had. As the statistics show, only a minority of blacks are actually in poverty (if you want to see the actual stat I think someone linked to it further up the thread). My point was to point out the inconsistency of affirmative action. Why are other minorities, which face very real challenges, not given a prop or a crutch to stand on as well? Why are Asians specifically discriminated against in admissions?

But my purpose in this thread wasn’t to argue for or against AA. My purpose was to say that there is a very real advantage Blacks get in admissions. You implied that Blacks deserve every prop they get, thus also implying that you believe Blacks do have an advantage. So thanks for proving my point…

Wow. Lots of ugly sentiments. Sour grapes perhaps?

Look, he’s a high-achieving, viola (and electric bass) playing Afirican American baritone who also throws the shotput and discus. Only here I read that’s nothing special (??!!) How many of those do you have in your high schools? I can say we have none in our local high schools. He also comes from a family of achievers (uncles and cousins also attended Ivies). This is a rare person indeed.

Further proof he’s no dummy, he applied and also got accepted to: “Duke University, Stony Brook University, SUNY Geneseo and Binghamton University.”

I say Kudos to the young man and I hope he does well in college and life.

@kerkolus According to the information given by “Urban Institute and Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured estimates based on the Census Bureau’s March 2012 and 2013 Current Population Survey (CPS: Annual Social and Economic Supplements).”, blacks make up thrice more of the poor population than their white counterparts :////

According to the nccp, the majority of poor kids are URMs :///

Yup. Black people definitely have an advantage when I have to fly to what the white man can walk to.
