Ivy League

I wish to get into a top school like NYU, Georgetown, UCONN, and the like. Ivy league would be nice too but I doubt it. What should I improve on/change?

I know that I need to work on my EC's but I have done a bit of community service. I suppose my grades are mediocre,
with mostly B's and A's with my lowest grades ever being a C+ (once or twice)

P.S : no senior schedule because I have not reached that far yet lol

Have you tried the SuperMatch college search tool linked on the left side of this page? It is a great way to consider many factors about colleges that might interest you.

You have no APs sophomore year then 5 junior year. That’s going to be a huge jump in workload level. Take at least one or two sophomore year.
Your grades are a little low for the schools you’re aiming for. Do you have any awards or clubs or anything?

I think OP has already completed sophomore year.

yeah I’m pretty much done with sophomore year. I have a few academic awards and I plan on joining a club or two in Junior Year.

Honestly, your shots are pretty low, your schedule looks good for junior year, but its pretty obvious you did it just for college (0 APs to 5 looks a little questionable) and how will your grades be considering your an A/B student now with no APs and not many honors in addition to doing more extracurriculars. I think you could have a shot at NYU (not Stern though), but it would definitely be a high reach for the ivy’s or other schools at that caliber. Those schools want you to be doing extracurriculars throughout high school not starting junior year and a “little bit of community service” won’t make up for it. To have even a fighting chance you need stellar SAT/ACT scores (2200+/34+), a great essay, or some kind of hook (URM, First generation, etc.)

Well I just did the college search and I got colleges like Union, Sacred Heart, UHartford, Connecticut College, etc based on my preferences and PSAT scores. How are those school though? I understand that 0 to 5 AP looks questionable but then again 3 out of 5 will be self studied.

P.S : How can I try to improve my chances for UCONN?

Oh, disregard the part I said about taking more APs then.

What sort of score do you think you can get on the SAT?
For UConn, it looks like you’ll need at least a 1900-2000, maybe a little lower (on SuperMatch it says 1860 average SAT). What’s your uw GPA right now? You say you got some Bs and some As, but that could mean anywhere from 3.1 to 3.8. You need to have at least a 3.7 to have a shot, and that would be with great ECs.

So this is what I suggest you do:

 1. SAT prep if your scores are below that benchmark, I don’t think you’ll need a class unless they’re incredibly low, just get some prep books and do the practice
 2. Join a couple of clubs at school you might be interested in. Not sure what you want to major in, but do a couple activities related to that major. (For example, international affairs = MUN, computer science = research internship, maybe even starting a small web design business)
 3. KEEP YOUR GRADES UP. I know this is third on the list, but it’s actually most important. Your GPA is the most important factor, and SAT scores or ECs won’t make up for a low GPA. I strongly suggest you drop some of those self-studied APs–your uw GPA is more important than rigor.

Current GPA unweighted and weighted is above 3.5 but I can’t remember what it is exactelly
I got a 1380 on the PSAT
Once Again, I do plan on joining clubs (majoring in Poli Sci and Business) but my school has nothing that is remotely related to either except student council which I lost. I do plan on joining Robotics and National History Honor Society (it could possibly happen, have spoken to the head of the history dep).
As for the grades, I am thinking that for the first month, I will focus on my classes and see how that goes, If it goes well then I will add on the self studies.

Is that out of 1600, or out of 2400?

Starting your own business would seriously add to your application. However, it also takes up a lot of time that you might need to use for academics.
If your 1380 is out of 2400 you might want to look into taking a prep course.

Thats 1380 with Crit Reading, Math, and Writing so I’m not sure if its out of the new 1800 scale or old 2400 scale?

^old 2400 scale

I don’t think there was ever an 1800 scale. There was a 1600 scale once, and they’re going back to it in a few years. A 1380 out of 2400 is below the national average for the regular SAT, and you’re going to have to improve it by a lot if you want to be competitive at the schools you listed. Otherwise I’d recommend looking at [test-optional schools](ACT/SAT Optional List - Fairtest), or less selective colleges. Or you could try the ACT and see if you do any better.

Is their anyway/ anywhere were I can take a practice ACT?
Is their any online courses or out of school courses were I can practice for the SAT (my school doesn’t offer SAT prep)?

Most prep books contain at least one practice test. You can buy them online, but I’d look at the library first.

Okay, last question for this thread. The colleges I got were Connecticut college, sacred heart, Union, and University of Hartford. How are those schools?
