Hello. I am a sophomore, and I took Spanish 1 in freshmen year, and took Spanish 2 over the summer. Now I am in Spanish 3. My school recently took off Spanish 4, so now I have to go straight into AP Spanish. I am worried because next year I will be taking 5 AP’s not including Spanish, and that will be a lot of work. If I do take it next year, I will have 3 years of Spanish. Is that bad when applying to Ivy Leagues?
Yes it is bad. Avoid not having 4 years of a foreign language if you can. You should back off of one of your other AP’s in order to take a 4th year of Spanish. Is a non-AP version of Spanish available to you? That would be fine. D went through Ivy admissions last year and her school cancelled German 3 and 4 leaving her with only 2 years of a foreign language. She had great stats but did not get accepted to some colleges she probably would have if she had 4 years of a foreign language
@Wje9164be Is having 4 years of language the same as someone taking Spanish 4 senior year. I took Spanish in middle school and in freshmen year got bumped up to Spanish 2. I am looking to take a break from spanish junior year and take spanish 4 senior year. Is this a good plan?
IMO it is better to keep going with Spanish – best not to enter an AP class rusty on the language.
No. Completion of AP Spanish will “count” as completing 4 years of a foreign language.
No. It will be difficult to get back in the groove after not taking Spanish for a year. You’re better off taking Spanish 4 junior year. To answer your other question, completion of Spanish 4 will “count” as 4 years of Spanish for the vast majority of colleges.
