Ivy Scholars at Yale University

oh wait…nevermind

My sister says they gave out two top awards and a few writing awards last year in GL. Top negotiators in the simulation got recognized, too. The people who got awards were brilliant the entire session.

so you have got your notification?

What prevents sleep?
Uhm…the tremendous workload. I would literally have work to do until like 10-10.30pm and then homework for the next day, which can easily get to 100-150 pages and then something to write. So yes. The workload.

In your essay you should answer the questions that are listed as part of it. It says it on the application. Last year they were 5 or 6, this year I guess they are the same number. Shape your essay around them and you will be fine. :)

Congrats to those who got in - you will love it.

Chances…

I have a 4.2 weighted GPA this year (Bs in Geometry Honors and Biology I honors), and have all honors classes to the extend possible. I am being pulled down to a 3.9 by one eighth grade class in which I messed up. I have strong extracurriculars (esp. in the fields of the APPLE program), and am the only person in the school of 2,200 to be taking two modern languages. I already speak two on top of that. I am also the most active debater among freshmen and sophomores. Mathematics isn’t my strong point, but I am very strong in other field. I have the highest French I grade in the school, and have been told that I am a good writer. I think that I could get two strong recommendations.

Please explain the consequences of have the GPA pulled down by a middle school math class. Should I apply? What are my chances?

Thanks.

bumpppppppppp

bummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmp

Hey!
I had a few questions about applying to Ivy Scholars… I’m hoping to apply for the Global Leaders Program too, but I missed the early decision… are my chances significantly lower I submit it now? =S Furthermore, I attend an IB school (in 10th Grade) and so I don’t really do any SATs/ACTs…etc and have no test scores to send in… would that really affect my chances? Finally… I was wondering if anyone’s applied for the scholarship before… because the program is quite expensive… especially as it is only 2 weeks and I would need to spend another 1000 dollars on a plane ticket… =/
Thanks!

ameripen, your stats will not prevent you from going to the program, unless you bomb your essay. Do well on the essay and I am pretty sure you will be in.

VioletRibbons, each of the three programs has a different scholarship amount per student available. So if you qualify for aid you might get 2500 for program A, but 3000 or 3500 for program B and C. Don’t expect them to cover your full cost though. Anywhere from 65 to 80% will be a reasonable expectation. You won’t need more than $500 for the two weeks in New Heaven…

thanks!!!

This program sounds awesome!! However, I am a senior who will have graduated high school by the time it starts in the summer.

to all you lucky alumnus of the ivy scholar program, were there many (if any) high school graduates in your session?

I’m asking about the only program that admits high school graduates, of course.

Another question: do you guys think it’s pointless to go if I’m going to college (not yale) in the fall anyways?

How long did it take for you guys to receive notice of your admission decision? I sent my application on February 29th, and I’m dying to know.

Might as well throw in a few questions of my own while we’re at it. I’m am hoping to apply to the APPLE program. However, the application ask to discuss my experience and development as a leader. Does this mean I describe leadership positions (such as in clubs) and what I did in those positions? I don’t have any positions right now (only a sophomore) and really at this time, I’m trying to “break out of my shell” (ex. get more involved). I thought this program would be able to help with that process, but if previous experience is required do you think I would still have a chance? Also, the application ask for test scores. The only test I’ve taken on the list is the PSAT and I only scored a 171 on it. With all these factors, should I even bother applying?

PSAT scores won’t matter; after all it is a practice SAT. The most important factor is the essay, which leads to your question. I don’t know what they want to see in the essay, nobody does. But here’s what I did:
Since I’m like you, and the school doesn’t provide leadership opportunities for underclassmen, I said this camp would prepare me to take a role as a leader later on.

Anyone else dying for march 29th to come around??? Aaahhhh~ I can’t wait! :D

Also, a quick question about the awards at the end of the program: what kind of awards are they? Is it given by your teachers? Also, how many are awarded?

Thnk long and hard about how you want to spend two weeks and $4k… they tell you the first night that if you are getting more than four of sleep a nite you are not workignhard enough…and that they rank the class on some military tree scale… stating that only the top 1,2,3 onthe tree have any chance of gettinginto an ivy.If youluv the material and don’t care about increasg your chances of getting in/not,cause it wont unless you are the 1,2,3 then go for it… but an internship is probably a better way to learn how the real world works not just the academic one.

@brussels94 that seems pretty harsh! theyre almost crushing your dreams by saying that. Shouldn’t the professors and mentors be encouraging you? I mean, if you got in the program- that’s already an accomplishment in itself!
Is the “tree” how they determine who gets the awards at the end?

Hey guys, I got some really simple questions…PLEASE answer them:

For the application, do we need two copies of the same recommendation, or two different recommendations?

Does the date on the application/prospectus mean the postmark date, or the date it has to arrive? If it’s the latter, this is problematic since I live overseas and idk how long mail will take to arrive. Do you think they’ll let me email them a pdf?

You need 2 different letters of recommendation. As for your second question… I’m pretty sure the application has to arrive by the deadline. (don’t quote me on that though) I would try emailing or calling the administration office to ask if you can send your application in via email. Good luck! ^.^

AAANNNNDDDD drumroll

results come out this thursday!!! im so excited and nervous at the same time!!! :D
