Ivy Transfer Acceptee stats/essays for future applicants

Wow, your erroneous phrase explains it all!
"...who teacheRs here...apparentEly"

Well, I'm going to ignore you now. I'm sorry that I made a few errors on my cheap keyboard that doesn't work very well.

EPorrell22, I really liked your essay about your school choice. I noticed however, that it was over 1000 words long. I'm in a similar situation and was wondering if you thought word length affected your acceptances to certain schools? Also, if you could post your Stanford one or describe how you made the essay shorter than the Dartmouth one, that'd be great!

If anyone else wants to share their opinion, I'd be really grateful.

I don't have a copy of my Stanford essay, but I basically cut it short by removing the anecdotes and talking broadly about first, my problems with UF, and secondly my desire to attend Stanford.

As far as the length goes, I don't think it's as big a deal as people think it is. As long as your essay is well-written and answers the questions asked, you should be alright.

I'm sorry that I could not be more helpful, I changed computers and lost most of my transfer stuff.

good info.

Um...super dumb question. How have some of you already heard from Brown? They send info in mid-May, I thought...is this data from the past few years? Sorry if this is obvious! (I am kidding myself about Brown anyway.)

Oh...is it because you had to reply to other schools, so you were able to ask for a decision earlier? I'd forgotten that that might be it...I only applied to Brown.

this post was immensly helpful. thanks.

Yes it was. One of the best I think.

By popular demand (seriously) (lol), I'm contributing to this thread.

I transferred last year. I applied to Yale, Brown, Washington University in St. Loius, Tufts, Oberlin, Vassar, Pomona, Penn, Swarthmore, and University of Puget Sound. I was deffered at Washington (never followed up) and accepted at Penn, Swarthmore, Vassar, Puget Sound, and Brown, where I now attend.

I sent in two essays with all of my transfer applications. One was a revamped essay from my freshman applications that I really liked. It talked about a science camp I worked at and how the children are able to see wonder in the simplest of things, things we to which we have become jaded.

My actual transfer essay was a bit unusual. Instead of lambasting my school (Tulane), I talked about a positive experience there learning to zydeco dance, and how I realized that even in bad situations you can find something positive. I then transitioned to still wanting to attend Brown (which was my first choice, but insert school as you will :)), and talked about the reasons for transfer. I went into intense detail. I really did my homework about the specific programs or attributes, and explained how they were different/better than what was available to me at Tulane.

Hey Claysoul!

how much does financial aid play a role in transfer admissions to brown...? I mean i know that they are need aware... just curious. (and maybe you talked to other transfer-ees at brown and how it affected them). danke

Clay- did you apply as a soph. or junior. and if soph. what were your high school stats.?

Claysoul, nice AOL screenname!

I'm interested in your transfer (college) stats, if you'd be willing to post them. Congratulations on getting into those schools and ending up somewhere fantastic...

Marta! Do you get the reference? If so, you're unspeakably cool!!! And thanks!

Unfortunately financial aid plays a big part in Brown admissions because they are need aware, not need blind. They only have a small amount of money (last year 400,000 for ALL incoming transfers - enough for an average of 20 students), however, they are increasing that number every year. This year was the first year they gave financial aid to transfers. I am one of 20 out of 140 (or maybe 170, I don't remember exactly) incoming transfers to get financial aid.

The tricky thing is that it's all or nothing. If you decide to apply for financial aid, and get accepted, they will fund your need fully. However, if you apply for financial aid, and don't make the financial aid cut, you get rejected. There's no middle ground. I had a really hard time deciding whether or not to apply for financial aid! I came this close holds fingers really really close together to withdrawing my application because I wanted to go so badly. Needless to say, I'm rather glad I didn't.

I transfered my freshman year for sophomore status.

Oh, and I have a legacy at Penn (Dad, Uncle, Granddad). And my great-grandfather taught at Brown, but I really don't think that mattered :)

I should let some of you know that very few will be admitted at Brown this year, as per a conversation with an adcom I had on Thursday.

By "very few," I mean... "Harvard very few."

ouch.. good thing i didn't apply.

I was told the number of slots and applicants, but I am not sure if I can reveal them here. Rest assured, this year is not going to be pretty : (

nspeds-- are you talking about harvard-few or yale-few? and why were you speaking with the brown adcom? (i'm sorry to be nosy, i'm just curious)

waiting for a borderline witty/ demeaning comment from nspeds....
