I am currently a freshman at Radford University and I'm considering transferring to James Madison University. In high school my cumulative GPA was a 3.01 and I got a 1700 on my SATs. I currently have a 3.0 cumulative in college. What are my chances of getting into JMU as a tranfer? Thanks for the help!

Everyone’s transfer process is different. I applied to JMU twice as a transfer student. Fall 2010 and Spring 2011. Rejected both times. I had a 2.8 in HS and a 3.9 in college (after 49 completed credits and 21 in process) as well as 1920 SAT scores. I was also a legacy and in-state student. This is what I learned applying to JMU as a transfer:

It is much much much easier transferring for the fall instead of spring.

They really stress completing your general ed’s early on, they did not seem very lenient or understanding if you do not have specifically what they are looking for.

Have courses in ALL of the core areas. (English, Math, Science with Lab, Social Science) That is important.

With that said I think my situation was a bit unique. I know students that have gotten in with GPA’s similar to yours, however from my point of view it doesn’t look great. I would suggest you try to improve your grades. I’m not saying don’t apply. Most certainly apply. Their is always a chance. Your definitely not out of the ballpark numbers wise. Just make sure your taking the right classes. And I think your going to have to improve your grades next semester. Worst case scenario, apply as a transfer after your sophomore year.

Thanks for the advice buckley. I’m definitely going to improve my grades. Anyone have any other opinions/viewpoints?
