UVA transfer chances

Ok here is the deal: I am a freshmen at James Madison University. I want to transfer this coming year. My grades and SAT were not stellar coming out of high school but my straight A's first semester is what I am banking on considering UVA's average accepted transfer GPA is a 3.5/3.6. I know that UVA has been receiving a lot more applicants because their adoption of the common application and the recession forcing more in-state students to apply making me worried about my chances. Let me know what you think.

Race: Caucasian
First Semester GPA: 3.82
High School GPA: 3.91 (weighted)
SAT:
Reading:600
Math:690
Writing:630

What's wrong with JMU, what's your major, why do you want to go to UVA? First off they will look at your high school grades more then your college grades. I think they admit 30 -40 kids and I would say 70% come from community college. I knew a girl who did the same thing you are trying to do, she went to JMU and got a 4.00, was wait listed at UVA coming out of high school, really high sat, and worked for the senate over the summer. She said they key to getting in as a second year was that she was wait listed in high school and took classes at a local community college her second semester. I think you have a GOOD shot of getting after one year and a GREAT shot of getting in after years at JMU.

Well I have always wanted to go to UVA and a lot of my family went there. I'm an econ major and you don't have to tell me about how JMU business is good I already know (though mcintire was rated #2 in the country). I have kind of developed a prestige whore complex and really like the sports, the campus, and especially the greek life at UVA. JMU is awesome in certain aspects (girls, parties, friendly people) but I've just become obsessed with going to a top-notch school because I feel like I will have better job and networking opportunities. More than anything I've been flip-flopping about it and want to know if I should rush a fraternity here or wait to see if I get in.

UVa definitely accepts more than 30-40 kids as transfers, try a couple hundred. I would go for it, if you don't get in you can always try next year. You have really nothing to lose.
