James Madison University EA

Wow, that number scares me. All I can do is pray! Thanks again.

Is it more competitive to get into EA at JMU than regular decision? My son applied regular decision and we considered it a target school for him. Everyone he knows that applied EA was deferred which was surprising to me. We’re in MD.

Yes, EA is more selective than RD.

@BMS123 JMU got more than 12,000 EA apps and deferred a third of them. They didn’t publish the accepted vs declined as far as I can tell. Lots of really strong apps got deferred. They did indicate 44% of the EA deferrals got accepted regular decision last year. Not sure if that helps or not.

I was also deferred from University of Pennsylvania (NOT PSU- Upenn)
I am really confused as to why I was deferred !!!

@BMS123- My D applied EA and was accepted and we are from MD. With that said she does attend a private school. I thought she would be deferred because her GPA was high but her SAT was on lower middle 50 percent. I am thinking the high school she attends helped her.

@sleepisamyth You were probably deferred, given on the surface (not knowing what comprises your GPA), both your ACT and GPA are in the low to middle range, respectively and EA is very competitive. Note the 2017 admitted student middle 50% ACT was 23-28. I am not sure why your counselor would consider JMU a “safety” school though. I do think you have a chance during RD depending on what that pool of applicants looks like. Best of luck, I am rooting for you.

I’m going out on a limb here, are those who were deferred with strong stats STEM applicants? It seems everyone is applying for STEM majors these days and due to sheer numbers every school, even safeties , will get competitive with STEM applicants. Schools just can’t take all STEM majors…they need to fill all their majors.

@AnneShirley I know a lot of non-stem kids that got deferred.

@mags425 and ShenVal18 are your acceptances from EA?

Yes, son’s acceptance was EA.

@lastone03 Yes, we were advised a few weeks ago - still waiting for the big purple envelope

@mags425 I am not sure JMU really sends out packets like other universities. At least they didn’t when my DS2 accepted a few years ago.
