January 2009 SAT Writing Discussion

I don't see the point in this. Majority means nothing, especially on a level 5 question. Let's drop the debate.

The answer would of been A but it has "had been" which messes it up.
Read the sentence without "had been" and then read it with "had been".

Answer is E.

I say A.

Comparison 1: The bullies were bigger than the nerds.
Comparison here is between two different things.

Comparison 2: The bullies are bigger today than they were in the pleistocene.
You can't say bigger today than they are in the pleistocene. Likewise you can't say crowds were bigger in 1950* than they were in 1930*.

*can't recall the dates, but I do recall that the fair in Paris was the earlier one.

Hope i'm write!

I second elaslawek.

Read post 211

Honestly, I don't recall what I chose. My brain's been so fried that I'm having trouble remembering my email password.

And the winner is, E!

From the NY Times...

Owing to increased imports the excess of exports was smaller than it had been the previous month.

Google "was smaller than it had been" or "were smaller than they had been". I stand by A!

It's A :P
mm, yes.

pretty sure it was E, i thought "had been" was only past perfect tense so it wouldn't work

Lol... everyone wants to be right and no one wants to be wrong.

Nonetheless, the answer is A.

sumpa-

why do you think the answer is A?

I Put A, but I reallyyyy wasn't sure and I didn't have a solid reason lol

I will prove it to you all.

At the fair, crowds were larger and more enthusiastic than

A- the crowds at the past fair had been

E- those at the past fair

Lets read A without 'had been'
At the fair, crowds were larger and more enthusiastic than the crowds at the past fair.

It sounds good.

If you add the had been, you make the class the crowds at the past fair had been _________ which means A wouldn't work

elaslawek-

Maybe... :P
But I think the sentence was more complicated than that and it made me choose A. :/

Shortened:

The crowd was wilder this year than the crowd last year had been.

The crowd was wilder this year in comparison with last year.

A clearly has grammar errors.

"The crowd was wilder this year in comparison with last year."

Well first of all, this wasn't even what the sentence was like lol

and second of all, it should be "with those from last year" :P

I was actually more talking about how answer A is incorrect.

E Wins.
lol

A wins actually cause I want my 800 writing :P

What would a minus 1 MC with a 10 essay be? 11 essay?

It may be an 800 still.
I got a 780 with -2 and 11 essay.
