January 2011 SAT Results

@bobtheboy go cry somewhere else…i got ‘an amazing score of 12’ on the essay, but only got 71/80 in multiple choice. its called practicing…finding grammatical errors is a totally different thing from writing a greatly formatted, coherent essay.

Just for an example…my friend got 78/80 on his multiple choice, which is probably only one question wrong…and he got a 8 on his essay.

So, its evident that essay scores do not directly correlate with multiple choice scores, unless you practice both and are good at both. You can’t just assume if you know how to write a good essay, you will know all the grammatical rules. Anyways, the SAT essay is bs anyways.

Re: test score anxiety: There’s an interesting article in January’s Science journal about a technique to address this problem; here’s a link to an article about it (you can’t go directly to Science online w/o a subscription): [Writing can ease test anxiety, study says - Spokesman.com - Jan. 24, 2011](Writing can ease test anxiety, study says | The Spokesman-Review).
Basically, it was found that writing about your anxieties for ten minutes just before the test emptied out your short-term brain’s preoccupation with that issue, and left you free to focus on the test. Worth a try, perhaps?

^ i read about this a week ago, and was angry i hadn’t found it sooner. thanks for the post.

Just don’t treat it like a big deal. Thank god I took the SAT before finding this site, it would have made me so paranoid. I went from 205 on my PSAT to 2320, simply because I wasn’t as stressed about the SAT.

I got a 2080 (700 M 680 CR & 700 W) first time—will that be a big deal for schools like UChicago, Duke, UVA, & William and Mary, and would getting a 2200+ make any difference? Thanks

i’m not crying, i got a 2400 even with my 11 essay so i really couldn’t care less. i was just wondering; a 600W score with a 12 essay indicates a low MC score, which means his/her grammar is pretty poor, and yet he/she still got a 12 on the essay. I don’t understand how this is even possible. i’m not saying that a good MC score means that you will most likely get a 12 on the essay, i was arguing in the opposite direction; if you can get a 12 on the essay, then you should be able to ace the MC easily…

Haha…If you got a 2400, you should know this: the SAT essay is different from the SAT multiple choice. You should know this; although they both test writing skills, they test different kinds of skills. The former tests how structurally sound you can write an essay with relatively good vocabulary and examples, while the latter tests how well you know grammar. Essays isn’t just writing with good grammar, its writing with structure and a certain flow whilst supporting your thesis with strong arguments. Writing a 12 essay does not imply you have very good knowledge of grammar rules that is required for multiple choice questions. Making that assumption is just ignorant.

I am also highly dubious of your score…but whatever, 2400 requires some kind of luck.

620 in reading (same from 610 in november)
can i still go to an ivy?
math: 780
writing: 750

i need help in reading. any advice?

So, this is what my one friend says:
“I have the best tip ever for the CR section.
Make sure that the answer that you’re choosing is in no way affected by personal knowledge, and is entirely based on a literal, objective analysis of the passage. In general, if you’re stuck between two answers, the first one you would want to go with is the wrong one since it’s likely biased by your own opinions/beliefs/experiences, so pick the other one.
(Make sure you try the 2nd half of this out on practice tests, since it kind of fails if your intuition is similar to those who write the exams)”
IDK about this, but he got a 2400 first try.

I agree with alwysgraceful03, I do pretty much the same thing when I do the CR sections. Also don’t try to interpret what’s not immediately in the text. The answer is pretty much right there in the passage.

^^Great tip. You really do have to detach yourself from the decision making process in order to find the objectively correct answer. The SAT is (I must grudgingly admit) expertly made, and there is always a right answer.

sorry to ask again…but any advice on how to go from a 2080 >>2200 by March? I did all the BB tests and bought PR’s 11 Tests but dont know what to do…thanks

730 CR
710 Writing (essay 9)
680 Math

2120, a bit short of 2200, which is my goal.

Math is my weakpoint and high 600s is what I usually get, but I thought I did pretty well on this test.

CR was decent, aiming for 750 next time.

Writing was a shocker, it’s usually my best section…

Hopefully a near 2300 in March :)

I really love the people who cry over 2300+.

alwysgraceful03, no wonder why I always choose the wrong answer when I’m stuck between two! I go with my gut…thanks for the tip I’ll try it out.

bows down I am not worthy

690 CR
770 M
800 W 78 MC 12 Essay
2260 total

i was expecting sub 2200 so **** YEEAAAA. i’m a little disappointed (pride-wise) in math since it’s my strongest section and the second time i got a 770. however, i was expecting a 750 in writing and getting an 800 made up for that.

my essay was also complete bs since i wrote personal reflections when i realized that i had no solid examples to back my thesis. it just goes to show that on the essay,

clear thesis + occasional fancy vocab + LENGTH(very important) + use of prep. phrases/dashes/varied sentence structure/etc. = high essay grade even if content = bs.

i haven’t a clue as to how you people get 750+ on CR, but i’m not gonna bother tryin anymore and not gonna retake, like any sane person would do.

780 in math isn’t possible for this curve. just sayin

as for all you people re-taking or striving for 2300+, best of luck. i’m done with the SAT. a 2270 superscore and 2260 single sitting is enough for the colleges i wish to go to. i’ll post my essay in a few days to show how a fail essay like mine got a 12.

how did you study for math

1st SAT (Nov 2010)

CR 800
M 680
W 720 (MC 790, essay 6)

2nd SAT (Jan 2011)

CR 690
M 610
W 750 (MC 750, essay 9)

Will 2nd SAT scores hurt?

What was the curve on this test??? im just wondering. Whats the most i can get wrong on each section for a 800? and assuming i get at least a 10 on the essay.
