January 2014 SAT

Hello everyone!

I am currently preparing for the SAT (Jan 2014) and I thought it would be interesting to "talk" to anyone of you who will also be doing the SAT in January. How far are you in SAT prep?

So far, I've finished the "theory" and I'm about to start the practice tests. I've planned to do at least 8 - 4 section by section (individually) to see how fast I'm going and 4 full. What do you think?

Also, I've been doing daily vocab preparation. My strategy is to organize the vocabulary by categories like I've seen in a file e.g. friends and enemies, emotions, language, activity and inactivity, etc.

Am I ok or should I speed up? How is your work going?

Good luck to everyone taking the SAT in Jan 2014!

Hey! I took the SAT in Dec., and got a 1730 with a 600 W, 580 M and 550 CR- I’m aiming for a higher score- and I’ve been doing plenty of practice tests, from BB and SAT Online Course, Online Resources,. Vocab is going good, and I always look over it now and then. The good thing is that we have Winter Break, so more prepptime. Good luck to you!

That’s great to hear! I see that, just like me, CR is not so good. What are you doing to improve it? btw happy new year

Vertiginous was on the October one… and I missed that question -_-
Anyway I’m trying to bring up my 680 Reading to 700+. Best of luck to all.

Vocabulary I only consider a couple(10) in a day, if I decide to. I want to try and focus in mastering the comprehension itself, and to do this I am focusing on practicing passages.

Rishab, how did you get the 680- did you do alot of practicing, because its a great score?

Yes, it was the one section I worked extremely hard on, because I used to score abysmally. (400s in 9th grade, 500s in 10th grade). The key thing is to realize that the correct answer is always restated somewhere in the text and that no interpretation is involved. Even still, I think I got lucky; I only got a 58 on this year’s PSAT…

Rishab, I am also in the same situation. I got a 550, i think luck, on the SAT in Dec., but I am even lower haha, my PSAT’s only circled the 30-s and low 40’s, but Dec. SAT i think it was practice that gave me it, since I did memorize alot of Vocab.

Same boat as the OP here. I completed the ‘theory’ and around 4 practice tests but I intend to go full steam from now onwards

My Vocab is decent, I always read a lot since young so I haven’t really memorized any words or such so far as I knew most of the words on the practice tests but I will start looking over them today

All the best everyone :)

On vocab I’m using a strategy that doesn’t involve memorizing the definitions per say. I gathered like 7oo (maybe more) words and started to organize them by categories. That way I can have a general idea of what the words are related to. I intent to do it a lot of times so that the words are memorized.

The long passages, though, I’m having a lot of trouble with them because I take too much time in everything. Do you guys have any suggestions?

For vocab, I find it useful to relate words to people or things around me. That helps me remember them better. Just my two cents worth haha

Hi guys I’m also going to sit for this Jan SAT but I’m afraid I’ll have to retake it. My Math and Writing are okay. However, I have so many problems with the CR section, especially with the short passage ones. Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with these?

CR you can do some vocab and practice reading passages and questions.

On vocabulary, I am using essential by krieger. This will be my first time. I finally signed up for the sat. I know I’m mostly likely going to retake it. I’m memorizing twenty words a day.

^ Excellent resource. Also, the primary book I used apart from the Blue Book was Mike Barret’s Black Book. I literally swear I would have scored at least 200 points lower had it not been for this live saver. (I got a 2250 on the October SAT)

Rishab, How much did it help you? And for what subject is it best for? CR, M or W.

It totally changed how I approach the test. My sophomore PSAT was 183, so I straight-up made a 400 point improvement in a year. I would recommend it to anyone. Writing is my best (Got an 800).

I also have The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar by Erica Meltzer. I’ve also used pwnthesat and number2. Khanacademy has solutions to the Blue Book math portions.

@tomdon you’re talking about vocab or passages? because i’m struggling w/ the passages right now

@classof2015hs do you think number2 is good?

Rishab, what are some ways that you score so high on the writing. When I take practice tests, and give myself on average a 10 on the essays (just a basic score), I generally end up at around 680-690. What do you think are someways to get the last couple questions correct or to just get it into the 700s?
