****JANUARY 2015 SAT THREAD (INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS).****

@asiankid88‌ I agree with you but I keep hearing of the other answer! Hopefully we aren’t wrong!

@Pinguman123‌ I feel that it’s that answer because in another question, it asked what was the chinese girl like? the answer was definitely “talented but not confident”. That “not confident” would most likely elicit a response that is skeptical. If you thought you sucked at drawing and your husband/wife says wow, you’re very talented, would you believe them? would you be surprised? to a certain extent, yes. However, you would be more skeptical and think that he/she is just saying that to poke fun at you or make you feel better.

@Pinguman123‌ you remember any hard math questions? or particularly tricky ones?

The only one that actually stumped me was the tank one; I put 18 but it turns out the answer is 36. Nothing too bad though.

For the dancer one it’s really tough to say. There were two options that seemed equally meritorious on an initial reading:

A) Spanned several eras
B) Various dance forms/ styles (or something like that)

I chose B.

The thing is, that the dancer had a long career (20-30 years wasn’t it?) was mentioned in the passage as you would mention a simple fact about someone. It was just an acknowledgment of the years between which his career spanned, so that they could explain that he later came back, after retiring, in the form of a choreographer.

Meanwhile, the fact that the dancer never conformed to orthodox dancing techniques, and in stead went out of his way to create his own steps and his own unique styles serves to convey why he gained prominence and popularity, which is more or less what the question was all about.

Again, I wouldn’t claim to be a 100% sure about this. I have given the SAT once before, and my scores were Critical Reading- 800, Maths- 700, and Writing- 770. So this time around, I was really focused on improving my Maths score and didn’t prepare as much for Critical Reading.

btw I didn’t intend to post that smiley in the above comment, happened by mistake haha.

@Vedant12‌ how many could i get wrong on reading and still score a 600+?

@Vedant12‌ How about the chinese girl one? What would her reaction most likely be after her husband praised her

@asiankid88‌ I think for 600 you can afford to make 15-16 mistakes, even though that number can go up or down depending on the curve. Given that the Reading was just a little tougher than it was the last time, I’d say for exactly 600, you could get away with a raw score of 46 out of 67. That roughly means either making 16 mistakes or 20 omissions or some combination of the two. For 650, I’d say you need a raw score of 53 or 52 out of 67. That means either 11 mistakes or 14 omissions. For 700, it’s usually 58 or 59 out of 67, which means you’d can’t afford any more than 7 mistakes. Hope that helps.

@asiankid88 about the praising one I don’t really remember but I THINK I went with surprised and pleased… Or something like that. I was tempted to go with surprised and skeptic, but couldn’t find any cause to say that she was “skeptic”. On the other hand, I do recall reading that she ‘smiled uncertainly’ after being praised, and that seems to me more “pleased” than “skeptic”

@Vedant12‌ I managed to guess a lot of them correct. In fact, most of the ones i wasn’t sure about, i guessed them correctly. I think i got about 8-9 wrong i’d say. can you stay on CC? i got some reading questions i’m unsure of, and it’s been really bothering me, haha. I want to break a 2100. My math should be 700+ i know i at least got 1 wrong. The rest i’m pretty sure of getting all right. But who knows… and my writing isn’t that good. i think i got at least -2, so i’m waiting for my essay to be like a 10 or something. My writing was only a 680 last time with a -4 and 8 essay… will the curve be easier this time? Also, will the math be better?

found the chinese passage. keep scrolling down a bit @Vedant12‌

Oh, guys what did you write in your essay- the examples? I went with:

  1. Aldoux Huxley's 'Brave New World', where the citizens of a futuristic world aren't concerned about things like religion, nationality, history, emotions, or even scientific discovery. All that most people care about is enjoying the physical and material pleasures that the 'New World' has to offer, and that is all they need to be happy. In fact, the only people who are unhappy are the protagonists, who go searching for complex, meaningful experiences and end up frustrated. So this shows that enjoying the smaller/ simpler stuff is all one needs to be satisfied, and looking for profound things can often lead to discontentment.
  2. The footballer (I wrote 'soccer player' in the essay because I suppose that's what they call it in the US) Francesco Totti, who has only ever played for one single club in his 20 year career. I wrote about how whenever people (interviewers) have asked him why he doesn't go after money, trophies, and legacy that some big clubs could offer him- he has always replied that he has never fostered complicated notions of being a football legend or being rich, and that he is perfectly fine playing the game he loves in front of his adoring home-town fans. This is a reminder that rather than going after money, success or other elaborated things like most young players do nowadays, it is important to cherish and remember the simple thing that has brought them all these things- love for the game.
  3. I wrote about a mythological figure who travelled to distant lands, looking for the meaning of his existence, only to ultimately realize that he was happiest when serving his family and friends and even strangers. I didn't have time to elaborate because I was running out of time and had almost filled out the two pages, and needed 5-6 lines for a strong end to the essay.

Can anyone grade these examples for me? I think that my first example was quite good and the fact that I filled out the entire two pages with three examples should help me score a 10. What I want to know though, is if you guys think that I could score 10, 11, or even 12 maybe?

My god I can’t wait for the results to come out already! AND THEY HAD TO ANNOUNCE THEM ON MY BIRTHDAY TOO (12th February). A 12 on the essay and a 730+ on Math would be the perfect gift, haha :))

@asiankid88 Yeah I’ll go through the passage right away

@Vedant12‌ yeah i see how it’s surprised and pleased.

Just read it, “it all but took her breath away” seems like surprised and pleased to me too.

@Vedant12‌ there was also a writing question sentence identification that was like… Popular even 50 years since recording it, the … pop song is …

There was an error on the “recording” part. It should have been “it was recorded”. I’m pretty certain of this one.

@Vedant12‌ do you remember any other no errors? other than the last question?

ye or since its recording. not reocrding it, doesnt create a logical link
