Japan for the summer...

I'm a sophmore who is attending a brand new school, and I was wondering the following:

Are there are summer programs that teach beginning japanese? Since my school is fairly new, it does not offer japanese language. The summer of 2007 is probably my last summer to possibly travel. Any suggestions? Experiences?

I was in japan this summer, it was awesome! The people are so cool and extremely humble.

I also went to Japan this summer for two weeks in Niigata (other side of Japan from Tokyo.) It was really fun. I went with a teacher and three other students from my school. It was awesome...

How much Japanese you learn in a summer as a beginner will vary greatly and you might be dissappointed, but just the experience of a summer in Japan will be one of the highlights of your life. You cannot begin to believe how awesome the Tokyo / Kyoto / Oosaka areas are. If you can go, for the love of God, do it.

Unfortunately, I didn't have the opportunity to really visit Tokyo. I wish I could've, though. We went to a train station there, though. It was SO BUSY. The floors were incredibly clean. It was amazing.

hi, I'm from Japan... and live in Japan.
I guess you can learn alot of basic japanese being here... but alot of the places have translations in english.
So it's not like, unless you know japanese you can't get around.
you can get around perfectly fine w/o being able to speak japanese.
not sure tokyo will be a great choice. although, the city is very busy and much like NYC.

There are quite a few programs that provide language instruction for all levels of students, including beginners. This website lists several of them:
