For the past week or so, I got the sudden urge to go to Japan. A friend of mine went and he absolutly loved it. I'm still looking for programs so I'm open to suggestions. I want to go for about 2-3 weeks during the summer. So what's the best program to do so?

A) Must we stay with a host family?
A1) How many of us would stay at each host family? I'm guessing it depends on the program?
2) If you have been, what was the average day like? Are you free to roam and such?

Your first two questions both depend on the program. Just google summer programs in Japan and you'll find a ton of stuff.

I went last summer to Niigata, Japan with three other kids from my school and a teacher. We each went to two different host families; one each week. I strongly suggest that you find a program where you could stay with host families because you will learn a ton of Japanese and get to experience the Japanese culture so much more than living out of a hotel.

YFU has a few full scholarships for summer programs to Japan. I went with them for the year program, however.

-Yes, you have to stay with a host family.
-It will be just you living with your host family, but maybe another exchange student will live nearby depending on how many families wanted to host in your area in Japan.
-My average day was get up, go to school, go to club practice, come home past 7:00. It's a really long school day, but you get used to it. Days with no school were ok. I either stayed at home and watched tv or listened to music, or I went out shopping. Transportation is very easy. Don't be scared by train and bus schedules. They're very easy to figure out. The amount of freedom you'll have to roam around will depend on how much your host family trusts you.

Oh Debbie 427, you went to Japan with YFU too??? Ravi, I highly suggest you go with YFU. It was wonderful and it was an experience I bet i'll never have again. It is really worth your money and your time.
