jas0n's Official UCI Q&A Thread

Hi it's me again. I was wondering is it possible to choose your classes to be on only Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. I kinda tried that but I don't think it quite work. Anyways what it came out was that I will end up having two finals on the same day in December. From your experience is it doable? Did I just sign myself up for an all nighter on that day? The two classes are bio and chem btw.

i know ppl answered no to this question already...
but i am just curious
how come some classes for fall 2007 are already full or waitlisted? if we can't sign up until our enrollment window opens (and not at the orientation)

We do sign up at the orientation. Sucks for people that signed up for the last SPOP. Even when I registered at the first spop, some of the classes were already waitlisted.

take a look at A&N classes, they are classes for freshman only so they probably wont be waitlisted yet

they said at orientation to use the waitlist to your best advantage, it can pay off at the end. some classes are major specific only i believe, such as physics and computer science for engineering/math majors

jas0n, i'll stick to it since there is more future in cse in irvnie :P

sweetdream:

Technically, it is possible to get that type of schedule, but it's very unlikely. Having two finals at the same time is not too bad. I did it once. However, I wasn't on the ball at the time so I got a bit stressed out. It still came out well though. As a freshman, I'd be a bit worried. Most likely you won't be on the ball come finals time, especially for two heavy science courses.

datinisunny:

As a freshman, registration just plain sucks haha. I would sit in those waitlists because you can definitely add when school starts and such, but not having the classes open is just the way of the freshman haha. Just keep an eye out during the adjustment period (the time from the last registration to the time of classes).

Here I come again. This particular question doesn't really have anything to do with UCI but I'm hoping that you can still answer it for me. Which calculator should I buy to use in college? Will a 83 be sufficient or how about an 84? Will most prof. even let student use calculator in class? In your own opinion which one do you recommend?

sweetdream:

It really varies among the professors. Some professors allow ti-89s, and some only allow ti-34s. Bring your ti-83 for now and buy a ti-34 at the student store if you ever end up needing one.

thanx everyone
ahhh that sucks!!!
cuz i am the one who signed up for the last mini spop T.T aug 20th

ooo this is pretty random
but is it better to attend the orientation program? or go to my class?
cuz i signed up for the summer class and my class is on the orientation day

oh and how is the greek system @ uci?

any free wifi access on campus?

dratinsunny:

1)Which class are you talking about? Orientation is very important. Particularly for those who need some help with the college system.

2) The greek system at UCI is very powerful. It runs a lot of on campus activities and I believe it has a huge weight on what ASUCI does. This is a rumor, of course. I'm not a part of the system so I'm not so sure.

corporateflea:

There is wifi access all around the campus. I hear there are projects increasing the wifi coverage throughout the entire campus. There's always internet access in every classroom (look for the cool Cisco routers! <3 Cisco.).

nice...good to hear

ohhhh free wifi... :D

hey im gonna be a freshman i registered for classes. how does it look, im an engineering major btw. I really am worried about that 10 to 12 gap if i don't get the waitlisted course. should i add more?

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/x_kmelyrbi_x/schedule.jpg

KiMMiE:

The gaps are normal since you're a freshman. Times aren't exactly the best for fall quarter. I had a 2 hr gap before. It's enough time to go back to the dorms, get some work done, eat, and then go to the next class. Your first quarter schedule looks good so far. If you can't handle that fourth class (EECS, physics, and math are all heavy courses), then consider dropping it before the drop deadline (2 weeks into the quarter). EECS10 will definitley take a lot of time as it is a programming course. Have fun and welcome to the HSSE :].

I have a lot of 1 hour gaps... :

Jason,

i am reading through the last few pages of this thread and it seems like everybody if not most have already signed up for thier classes or at least will be doing so very soon during SPOP.

because i live in HK i decided to skip Spop.. i didnt think i really needed extra orientation, like i could figure things out when i get there. are the kids that are going to, or went to SPOP getting pirority in signing up for classes? if i wait until i get there when school starts would that be too late to sign up for classes? will i be stuck with no class/ impossible scheuduels?

as u showed me before, engineering majors have a set menu of classes which i must take. what if the classes are full and i cant take them? since the window that you mentioned before is not yet open to us now (or is it?), how can i sign up for my clases? what can i do?

thanks

yeah me too shoefactory. Anyways I know school start on September 27th but I only have class on MWF so does that mean my first day of school will be Friday the 28th?

eyebee:

You live in HK? That's so cool haha. Anyway, yes, SPOP attendees get to register while on campus so that means they get priority over you. You will have to wait for your registration window to open. However, as an engineer, you will be taking math, physics, programming, and a GE if you want to take a full schedule. You will definitely get into math and physics but a programming/GE course may be difficult. You will get terrible times so don't be surprised when you see your options. I suggest getting on those waitlists. A lot of the times people forget to pay fees or drop from the class the first two weeks so you normally get in if you're early on the waitlist. If you want a survey of whether you'll get in if waitlisted at a certain position, go ahead and shoot me a post for me to analyze your chances.

sweetdream:

Yes, your first class will be on Friday. It's really odd how UCI does it, but it's nice to know you have a break after the first day of school! I personally came to like the idea.

Two questions:

For admission- would a student seeking a political science major fare a better chance than the average applicant because of the more unique major choice?

Social- How is the club scene in Irvine? Are there any electronic/dance clubs nearby without going into LA?
