jas0n's Official UCI Q&A Thread

political science is not a unique major.

Jason,

but alot of the popular classes/ proff's already have 10+ waitlists... and my window is not gona open up anytime soon. =( anyways il do that.

For the class math 2A, the prereq's are either to take AP calc or pre calc in UCI. I take IB in my school, however. But i have taken a undergraduate calculus 101 class in stanford last summer. Are the pre-reqs flexible enough for me to take math 2A? or even skip it since math 2A is calculus and i have done it before? Also, could u just generally elaborate on how the pre-req system works and who i shud contact or where i can get more info (eg. testing?) thanks!

btw why is HK so cool?

ey jason,
what major at UCI do you reccomend doing if you plan on applying to pharmacy school?

Yay! Back from hiking in the Yosemite wilderness!

sonic pwr: No, I'm not jas0n, but I hope I can answer this. Pharmacy School, like Medical School, does not care what you major in. You can major in interprative dance if you so choose. However, you do have to fulfill certain pre-admission requirements to join, such as a year of general chem and physics and so on.

For example, here is UCSD's pre-admission req's:
<a href="http://www.pharmacy.ucsd.edu/admissions.shtml#PreReq%5B/url%5D">http://www.pharmacy.ucsd.edu/admissions.shtml#PreReq</a></p>

Remember though, that requirements are different for every school. Here's a website for all the pharmacuetical schools: <a href="http://www.aacp.org/%5B/url%5D">http://www.aacp.org/</a></p>

So you have a few choices:
a) Major in something related to pharmacy such as bio sci or even chemistry so that the majority of your pre-req's are finished with your major.

b)Major in the easiest thing you can and do all the pre-req's seperately so you can bolster your GPA as you wish.

c) My personal choice. Major in whatever makes you happy. If you plan to go to pharmacy school, I would expect you have some inclination towards some aspect in the pre-req's of the school, such as biochemistry or even english. However, this may not be true. There is no absolute best major to pick to become a pharmacist. As long as you fulfill the requirements for the schools you wish to apply to, they'll be happy. Don't think that all the look at is GPA. They won't turn down someone with a 3.0 GPA if they did prize-winning research. Yes, GPA matters, but don't count out the importance of your ECs and LORs.

thks for your advice :)

do we find out our move-in dates in september, when we get our housing packets?

is it ok that i'm taking only 3 classes as bio major?

i mean i use to take as much as 6-7 classes in high school

i feel like i'm slacking off too much

sonic pwr:
You're welcome.

prolixity:
Your username intrigues me for some reason. Also, yes, you get communites and roommate assignments mailed to you "early September 2007".

corporateflea:
It's quite acceptable to take only three classes right now and all you really need as a bio major anyways. It'll help you realize your 6-7 classes were easy on you. A smart move so you can adjust to campus life a little less burdened.

evilleprechaun:

yes, i'm sure it does. lol. most people don't know what it means, though. i've always wanted a username that's an actual word, so i chose this one.

eyebee:

Although waitlists are 10+ it’s very possible to get in. I was waitlisted 17th place for Anthro 2A (a highly demanded course) and got in. If you’re really worried, tell me which classes you are looking at it, and I’ll chance you from my experience.

The Stanford class might not coordinate with UCI because Stanford is a private university. You have to go to school and talk to a counselor to help you fill out a petition. There are no guarantees because of the school differences. As for placement tests and such, this says it all:

<a href="http://www.testingoffice.uci.edu/precalculus.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.testingoffice.uci.edu/precalculus.html</a></p>

You will need to have either the placement test or pre-calc course finished in order to electronically enroll in math 2A. The system will allow you after the test scores have been processed at the administration office. If you use that Stanford class and it works, you will have more problems to come like I did. I started at Math 2D, but I’ve had to ask for authorization/clearance to enroll in every physics and math course since math 2A and math 2B were taken at a community college. Anyway, pre-reqs are pretty much requirements to have fulfilled before being able to enroll in a course.

BTW, I just find HK interesting because I’ve only lived in America. It’s natural foreign countries interest me haha.

Hey Jason, would it be a bad idea for me to attend orientation one day after having taken the placement exams? I imagine that it would take some time for the results to be calculated, but since I live in NorCal, I want to save my parents the trouble of having to make 2 trips to and from Irvine, so I was hoping that I could just take the exams and attend orientation on the same week. Would that work out? =/

You will get the results in a couple of hours.

If I take Dance 90A-B-C, which is listed under breadth requirement for both Humanistic Inquiry and Multicultural Studies, do I fulfill the requirements for those two categories?

0-0-0:

As confident said, you will have your results within a few hours. I took my placement exams during the morning of orientation.

confident:

If they are listed in both areas, they can be used to cover both areas. However read the descriptions of the reqs you have to fulfill. There are underlying conditions.

Hey Jason, I'll be freshmen this year. I have two questions. I took Macro, micro econ, spanish 101, and polis at community college. I got A's in those classes except B in spanish. I sent my college transcript before July 15th.
first. would my community college gpa transfer to my U.C.I. GPA too? or does it just count as "credit". If it counts as GPA, then i have to start off my uci career with 3.67 GPA...?
second. i'm a business econ major. I need to take econ 20-A, 20-B, and 25 this year. 20-a and 20-b are macro and micro. Do i have to take econ 25 cuz i've taken macro and micro before?

hotelier14:

most likely just credit..

just as you would with ap tests..

hotelier:

They only take credit/no credit (pass/no pass at UCI). Your CC GPA will NOT be factored into your UCI GPA. However graduate schools will get your community college transcripts so they migth see that. It's all lower-div stuff so no need to worry. Check assist.org for how things transfer. Whatever the site says is final. If it says it transfers then it does for sure.

Is it possible for me to take 20A and 20B(micro and macro) in first and second quarter even though i took them at CC already? or i just have to take next econ course

hotelier14:

You can retake those econ classes if you like. It won't count, and it might not factor into your GPA. I'm not sure about that. There still might be other things to it so I suggest asking a counselor here.

Here I am again to bug you Jason. Well I wonder if you know about the Welcome Week September 24-26. It's a three day thing but since I'm commuter I don't think I want to drive back and forth three days in a row then go to school on Friday. If I have to choose one which day is more important to go through?

And another question: When should I start buying parking passes? Which one should I get? The standard one or the privilege or reserved?
